• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

 That's Great, that your minister/church take this addiction seriously. Unfortunately, many do not seem to. I pray for your continuted deliverance. BIG CONGRADS!!!

Wow really? Maybe it is because our pastor is an ex-smoker? That just seems unreal that any church would not takes the nicotine addiction seriously. Plus our church is all for us being annointed and prayed over and looking to Jesus in every area of our lives. Thank you for prayer as well. I appreciate all prayer so much. God Bless, and hope you are enjoying a Blessed day.:)

I guess to many of our "deacons" smoke for it to be addressed as something that we need deliverance from--it's kinda like being overweight. You know I have never been taught a word about actual fasting from a church other than TV. (Our bunch only rarely mentions it with regard to historical content).

Oh that would certainly explain their view on smoking! :) You know that is an excellent point you made on fasting. I have yet to be in any church that stresses it or explains it at all! Yet it was very important and done a lot in Jesus day. Maybe should should start a thread about that.

Your mind is playing tricks on you. I've been smoke-free for a little over 2 years now. Even now, on occasion, I will start to think about a cigarette and want one. The more I try NOT to think about it, the more I'll want it. It's the habit you're fighting now. It's not the physical addiction. You're going to have to battle yourself to stay off them. If you really want to succeed, you need to go DO something to get your mind off the craving. It really helps to get busy and keep busy to get your mind off it.

This is what I mean about the Habit is harder to break than the addiction..A friend suggested that it normally takes 30 days to break or form a habit and that as "an a foe is about to be thrown off a cliff or as they feel their control over you slipping, they often tighten their grip" suggesting that the devil may play a part in it for as long as we remain double minded, as people with addictions are, then we are not properly serving God and we are to "expect nothing" from God when that is the case. Thoughts?

That is so wonderful that all of you are quitting/or have quit. I never started smoking because I couldn't stand it. Both of my parents smoked since they were teens, and so I was around it all of the time. Now I have asthma, but had it since the age of 27. I'm still around cigarette smoke a lot because my in-laws smoke, and both of our sons smoke. I can't win...but I'm so glad to hear that there are people that do quit.

I hope they w/b considerate of you--You know, it did not bother me for people to say "We don't allow people to smoke in our car/house etc" I just did not go see them much...
That is another reason for quitting--all you non-smokers- stand your ground, be nice please, but it does help us want to quit..

Thanks to all the friends I had who would not let me smoke in their houses....

Been 4 years now since I have smoked so I know I'm all done it for good.
This method may not appeal to all but to heavily addicted smokers it is worth a shot.
I used chewing tobacco to quit smoking. I used it for a whole year.
I didn't just chew and spit. I usually swallowed all the juices that came from the tobacco and only spit the tobacco after I was done with it. You have to use plain unflavored chew for this. At first a little chew was enough to fill the nic craving but then I needed more. The worse cravings I got the more chew I would use and swallowing all that nicotine ensured I had enough in my system to kil the craving. After 1 year on chew, I no longer had cravings to smoke but still had cravings to chew. I quit the chew and took up chewing trident gum. After 3 days I no longer had nicotine cravings but kept chewing trident gum for 1 whole year. It was easy to quit the chew because after a few days I could feel how damaged my espohagus was from it and had no desire to do any more of it.
Its kinda gross as amethod goes but it worked for me and was the only thing that did. I never went through withdrawals and it worked permanently. If youve tried everything else then its worth a shot.

My husband did this method, and it worked for all of 5 months. Now, he's smoking again. . . :(

No you won't, but loosing baseball is better than your loved ones loosing you. I like "pretend" smoking, it helps.

Although, I am still suffering cravings and if they get severe enough I have allowed myself nicotine gum once in awhile--this is only for stress times and I am doing better--anything to try...I don't know about you guys, but I feel like I just got to make it this time. .or I never will.
