  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Careful with that. It can be taken to such an extreme where you can become a veritable hermit.

That's not really what 'coming out' means. In fact a some aspects of coming out would leave many scratching their heads. o_O

Separation from the world after one learns the way is essential for a Christian. But it can be taken to fanatical extremes just as all other human behavior can. But if you feel that I am totally confused then please explain what YOU mean by "coming out".

That was my question in the OP.

So it's ok to give to charities that seek to aid those who are victims of the self-inflicted plagues spoken of in the admonition to "come out" so we won't suffer those same plagues, instead of giving to the church i.e. preferring one another?
not quite.
give to the church first.

then if God enables you to do so, look at what you spend on yourself, and seek ways to minimize that, so you can give to the other ministries who are helping to rescue victims both in the US and abroad from those worldly plagues, in order that those people might recover from drugs, homelessness, sex trafficing, etc.
It's called 'helping your neighbor'.

if we look dilligently at what we spend on things we want but don't necessarily have a real need for, it's truly surprizing how much discretionary money we will find with which to help others.

And from first hand experience, i can guarantee it will blow your sox off
more than anything else you do this Christmas.

It's one thing to go into the world to help, but it's an entirely different thing to go into the world to help others come out of it.

But I'm like that ox, I don't want to be muzzled. At my age I deserve the reward of now having some of the 'unnecessary' stuff I've always wanted. :D

I know the money I spent on this planer could have fed many poor folks, but I just had to have it. ^_^

You said the following:

What did you mean by that?

Being a hermit isn't what coming out is, although there is a time to withdraw from society at large.

Every Christian has a personal ministry which eventually encompasses their whole life and everything they do (they'll realize this eventually). Mine is to do my job properly, which helps others to move ahead, and I'm very good at it. I serve many people, and my service is most effective if they don't know that I'm a Christian. Doing the deeds of faith is actually easier for me to do 'undercover', leaving the preaching to others.

Do you realize how much ozone you are personally responsible for depleting with that purchase?

That thing is manufactured in China, and then it's entire journey here has been nothing but a smog fest.

I never said that being a hermit is what coming out is. I said the opposite.

Pound for pound of freight large cargo ship transport rates right up there with rail for efficiency.

Where are Jet machine tools made. I've got my eye on starving the poor again by buying a band saw and a jointer sometime after the new year (hoping for a sale).

Why cheap out? Starve a few more and go for Festool.

Before I was Christian (once) I was more of an outsider, wannabe punk. Than when I converted I became more normal. In a lot of churches it seems like theres are worldly standards - dress, job etc. It wasn't that, though I bought a nice woollen jumper, more like a more healthy lifestyle. It was odd, that Id had a "breakdown-cum-breakthrough" but it was more of a cause of normality, like reversal of normal standards for such events. It was a cause of health.

I don't think Festool sells what I want here. Also Jet isn't exactly cheap.

Jet® 6'' Deluxe Jointer w/Quick-Set Knives, Model JJ-6CSDX $919.99

I need the extended bed jointer for making long edge glued table tops.

thumb.php

Jet® 14" 1.25HP Deluxe Band Saw $999.99

I like the Jet Band saw for it's 13" resaw capacity. I plan on making a mini sawmill sled for it and milling my own hardwoods.

Except for a new table saw down the road these tools will complete my power shop ( I've had the same Craftsman table saw for nearly 40 years, and I'd like some newer features).

The poor will just have to eat 'rice and beans' for a while. ^_^

Edit: I also might buy a sliding miter saw for cross cutting long boards. My brother left me his Craftsman radius-arm saw but the new sliding saws take up less space, and are more accurate.
