  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Eugenics is killing the weak purportedly to create a stronger race.... unless your point was about overpopulation as opposed to what kind of population we have....

No...:sigh: I was arguing the humanist, science based belief in survival of the fittest. It was facetious.

KCDAD, you have a very interesting point of view on "satan." Do you have any recommended books/readings which aided you in coming to this conclusion? I would like to investigate this.
The Bible first.
Research "Lucifer" the name in Latin and where it is used in Isaiah 14, 2Tim, and Revelation
Research satan, the adversary in Hebrew as it is used in Job.
Who tempts Paul... he does himself. He says so.
Who tempts Jesus? The story says it was the devil, but it also says the Holy Spirit drove him into the wilderness... were they working together? Of course not. So who tempted Jesus? The same that tempted Paul and tempted Peter and tempts us all... ourselves.
Think and pray about the nature and character of God...would God create an imperfect angel? What are angels but mesengers of God? They can do nothing but deliver the message of God. (Sidenote for Christmas... Gabriel announcing Mary's pregnancy??? An angel delivering God's Word... literally?!)
Think and pray about yourself: where does temptation come from?
Think and pray about the nature of our common image of "the devil".... how could he have any power of us? He isn't flesh, he has no power other than what God could have given him, all the exorcist stories are just mumbo jumbo and not based on anything spiritual.
Realize that never is satan, lucifer and the devil ever described as the same "being". They are all talking about the same thing: OUR selfish, egocentric natures.

Throughout Job, it states that Satan (or adversary, accuser) approaches God multiple times and has conversations with Him. This appears very much as a personified being. How does that fit in with your theory?

(I am not attacking, just inquiring. I like your theory.)

Job is a story... it is a story of faith and intellectual challenge, a story of why bad things happen to good people, it is about not believing the "politically correct" solutions your "friends" give you. It is also a creation or "origins" story. BUT it is a story. It's origins go back hundreds of years before Abraham. It is probably a story he learned as a child....
from http://mrbraiman.home.att.net/lit.htm
Personification (II) Where an abstract concept, such as a particular human behavior or a force of nature, is represented as a person.

The Greeks personified natural forces as gods; for example, the god Poseidon was the personification of the sea and its power over man.
"said the west wind to the little lamb: Do you hear what I hear...?" This is another literary device known as ....
Anthropomorphism: Where animals or inanimate objects are portrayed in a story as people, such as by walking, talking, or being given arms, legs and/or facial features. (This technique is often incorrectly called personification.)

So basically...how a person determines his or her concept of Satan can generally boil down to the age old literal vs. allegorical interpretation of the Bible debate, correct? But I'm aware that that's a completely different thread...

There is no literal interpretation available for evil satan, cast out of heaven, out to tempt mankind away from God. The ONLY literal interp is that Satan works for God. just like Gabriel and all the rest of the angels. In that case, hell makes no sense, and satan isn't going to be sentenced to hell and death for doing God's will.
So, of course, it is literature. You can't read The Bible literally and make ANY sense out of hell and the devil.

Let me correct that last sentence... I can't read The Bible literally and make any sense out of hell and the devil.

science based belief in survival of the fittest

If you're refering to the view that the survival of the fittest = survival of the strongest, that's really based on a (deliberate?) misunderstanding of the science. "Survival of the fittest" in evolutionary biology refers to the survival of species that fit (like a glove fits) most completely into their evolutionary niches. It isn't about being the strongest, or the most intelligent, individual on the block.

Science - just like religion - can be misused to support all kinds of rubbish.

I know what "fittest" means. In what way would the weak and stupid be more fit to survive?

The white man is the most weak and stupid of them all. By rights the African races should rule the earth. They have the limitless gene-pool, from which all races can be made. Any other race is a "watering down" of the "black" gene.

But, unfortunatly, it is the while male that seems to rule. God knows why, but please, someone, kull as while we are still relatively vulnerable. ;)

You mean the way, say, an amoeba is less fit to survive than a sabre-toothed cat?

The word "fit" - like a lot of words - has more than one meaning.

How does Satan attack us? Easy. He doesn't. Assuming he exists at all, he most certianly could not have the kind of power and influence often attributed to him. There is too much mundane suffering in the world for God to allow an invisible malevolent force to roam around cuasing more suffering.

Why do you presume an amoeba is weaker and stupider than a saber toothed tiger?

If Satan exists, then he's part of God as are all things.... so the question becomes, how does God attack us?
