How does being good get you saved?

Just a simple question, How does being good get you saved? How does being good make you a christian?

God created us to do good works not to be good to get saved. where does it say in the bible that being good gets you saved?

Just "being good" doesn't get you saved nor does it make you a Christian.
You must accept Jesus Christ as your Savior.

The issue of good works is something a bit different...there are Christians who believe good works is part of what makes you a Christian and there are others who believe they have nothing to do with it. There are several discussions in the Protestants, Catholics, and Jewish Meeting Place on the issue of works if you'd like to read some thoughts on that.

Hi, PrayingOne ~ a person is not saved by works or by being a good person. Salvation comes by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ who died on the cross to forgive us our sins. Scripture says this:

Ephesians 2:8, 9 NKJV

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.


Good works is a consequence of salvation, not the cause of it.

However, God has an expectation of how we should act and treat others.

This is one way we thank God, as opposed to being saved because of it.

What does Isaiah say God's opinion is of our good deeds?

If there were any other way to Heaven other than Jesus. That would mean Jesus died on the cross for nothing. Jesus is the only way. It was done when He said on the cross: It is finished. So many people try to find other ways to heaven such as good works like what you just asked. To many people have to much pride in their worship. The worship of God and pride do not go together and this is where so many Christains fall short of the glory of God. They even go as far as to change God's word to try and make God more likeable to them and everyone one else. This turns into pangan and idol worship which can also come from good works. So you see as long as you stay on the straight and narrow, read God's word and most important accept him as your savior you have nothing to worry about. Being good is something that goes with the territory as God cleans you up on the inside it will show on the out side. This is were the being good comes from. Besides, when we are bad who is gonna forgive us? The Do gooders? Na, you know who.

Very true! Except we need to TOSS the rest of the Covenant AGREEMENT into the EVERLASTING GOSPEL. That of FREE WILL! So we can see that ONE has got to let CHRIST DO HIS WORK THROUGH US! (see Rom. 8:14)

Adam was tested!! We too are TESTED to see if our (OUR) work [will abide]? That IS OUR FREE DAILY DECISION! And it is an ETERNAL LIFE OR DEATH DECISION! See Rev. 3:16-17's SICK LOVE! These ones have been born again only to be "SPEWED OUT" BY CHRIST! (sickening love) & Rev. 18:4? Being PARTAKERS of know sin takes NO WORK! But an 'easy' sickening pew warming one, huh? Again LOST! Good men do not go to heaven.

Faithful men do.

Even Jesus said ' I am not good..' He was offended that someone called him 'good'.

By grace are ye saved.... God hears a crying heart, a heart lost in sin and weeping... those can be saved but it is by grace regardless of the sin... a heart lost in sin and laughing gleefully about is not pitied by God...

You do have to let Jesus do the work, it isn't a work any man has ever comprehended fully I think....

I read Isaiah a lot. It's mostly about that.... ever noticed how so much of the old testament is simply about God being angry that they build statues and bow to them?

He keeps saying I am a living God! and I made you in my image... these statues are an abomination to everything I am and you are! Don't you know you are so much better than this...? More or less thats all it is over and over again...

I believe Isaiah says that the best of our deeds are like "filthy rags" to God.

Filthy rags -- in the original Hebrew is actually the mensus cloth of women!

so really no need to baost abt deeds -- they certainly cant save you at all. but after you are truly saved, you wld want to do the good deeds that God has prepared for you

If everyone in the Old Testament fell short, how did they get to Heaven?

I believe they are worthy to be in heaven because of their faith. Because we are saved by faith through the grace of God.

Furthermore, true faith results in good works....so good works would not be a big deal to the true christian coz he/her makes it a part of him/her.

I think God would be more pleased if you really loved Him more than anything else in the world, instead of always thinking that you need to do things for Him.

Exactly, however we must realise that it is possible for faith without works, otherwise James wouldn't warn of it.

Again, if we truly love the Lord, it would be natural or rather, not a big deal when you do good works coz it's become second nature to u.
