How do you want to be laid to rest?

I hope others do not find this thread too morbid, but I am curious how other posters feel about their method of being laid to rest? Do you want a traditional burial in a casket or do you prefer cremation? Ashes scattered in the forest? Or something more unique like donating your body to science?

As for me I am one who is very squeamish about death. I abhor the idea of my body decomposing in a dark coffin buried six feet underground. I'd prefer my body cremated as soon as possible. I wouldn't mind burying the cremated remains in the ground with a tombstone on top. That is what my grandfather did. I remember at his funeral being shocked when I saw a little cube instead of a large coffin. I thought they somehow stuff his entire body in that little box. My eyes were wide open when I first saw it and publicly said aloud "how'd they fit him in there?" I was like eight and everyone and the funeral starting erupting in laughter.

Apparently he had the same disgust for the decomposing process as I do. His was is the most appealing for me. My father expressed the same wishes. Although I can respect people who donate their bodies to science, I just cannot stomach the idea for myself. I do not want my loved ones to see my dead body on display either. I want their last memories of me to be as of an animated body, not a lifeless corpse.

All my life I've said this: "I'll be dead. Throw me in a ditch, I won't care."

The thought of people staring at my dead body is hideous. Please don't waste the time or money on a casket and fancy funeral. I'm perfectly content to be cremated and scattered in a forest. I'll be rockin' in Heaven with Jesus, do what you want with my old shell.

I wouldn't mind if anyone who feels so compelled shared a few words about me or my life. Maybe recite some of my favorite Scriptures, sing or play a favorite song of mine. Definitely close it up with a quote from Tolkien :D Then go home and stop being sad!

I guess it comes down to one of two choices. My body being incinerated to cinders or being eaten by worms.
If all goes to plan, then hopefully my soul will have moved on and whatever happens to the shell I have left behind won't bother me too much. If I have any dental crowns or implants, maybe they could be denoted to an art gallery and used in a sculpture or something.

Private viewing for family and friends. But I want a public memorial. The first time I heard this song I knew I wanted it at my service. Sorrow's inevitable. But I want laughter and joy. That's how I live and want to be remembered. :)

Not cremation, a large box is not so inviting either,

What I wish is to hear people say,

    "Heh, look he's moving."

    :)

The more I think about it, I quite like the idea of becoming stuffed and turned into a toy or manikin.
If anyone in my life had wished me dead, then it would be a good act of revenge!
All I'd need is a hole cut in the back and a place to insert some batteries. I'd be walking and talking in no time!
I could become the next Resus Anthony!

Instead of a funeral, I want each member of my family to travel to a place I went to when I was young with some of my ashes to scatter them in pre-selected locations.

I'd rather they GOT OUT and experienced some of the things I did, whilst returning me to every KEY place I've ever been to. I always traveled alone - and so will they.

I'm going Ashes scattered where ever my son and/or other family want ... we turn to dust anyway .. have that and no viewing stated in my will. No formal services. Won't donate to science ... don't like that idea either ... strangers picking over my parts? ... no thank you ;o) I'm with you lasting memories should be the good ones of one's life.

Interesting. I guess I'd like to leave some marker that I existed at one point. I also think a tombstone would give my loved ones a place to visit once in a while to remember me. Although if you get your ashes somewhere I guess that kind of becomes sacred ground for the memories.

I agree though, I don't need some fancy funeral. Something humble.

I am honestly not sure. Although I lean towards cremation, part of me hesitates should there be any uncertainty whatsoever about what caused me to pass away. I'd really prefer to always leave the option of having an autopsy conducted to answer any questions no matter how far in the future they may arise, and that's not possible if I'm scorched to a crisp.

I have already arranged my cremation and wish my ashes scattered in a fast running stream.

There is a Youtube video of a funeral service (cannot post here due to language) but in the video it shows them lowering the casket into the ground and the person who died left a recorder and in the tape he is talking about banging on the coffin wondering where he is and wanting to get out. The mourners are all laughing, so at least he helped put a smile on their face.

I guess I'm an odd duck, but that's nothing new to me :) I don't visit graves. Nobody's actually there. Sometimes I add a little "say hello to __" in my prayers if I'm thinking about a departed loved one :D

Whatever gives the most comfort to the ones I leave behind.
