It depends. When I'm doing pure Bible study I pray, read and take notes (even if it is only writing down what I read that day). I focus on a book at a time when I do this (plus reading a Psalm and Proverb a day).
I also "casually" (for lack of a better word) read the Bible. I've read much of the old testament the same way I'd read a history book (going for the highlights)
Then there are times when I'm reading an extra-Biblical book - I go back and forth between the book and Scripture, reading the Scriptural references as well as making sure that the writer conforms to Scripture. When I do this I tend to skip around more than reading a book beginning to end.
