  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How do you memorize Scripture?

I haven't purposefully tried to memorize scripture since I was a young child made to memorize my "piece" to recite in front of the congregation. Since then select scripture naturally becomes "sticky," retained without effort or intent on my part but rather merely because it has special meaning or is oft repeated in liturgy or reading. I gave no thought to translation. I reckon I file some away from multiple translations, whether the one I read, the one used in liturgy, or the one from my childhood. It does not matter to me.

Do you exclusively memorize all of your verses in from one translation or do you use multiple translations?

Over the course of my life I've read from and used a number of translations, as such there are plenty of times that the way I have a verse/passage memorized might be from one translation or it might be a blend of translations.

As for memorization generally I don't generally make a conscious choice to memorize a passage. If I read the same thing many times because it's a place in Scripture I frequently go to then it starts to stick.

One way to memmorize Scripture is to sing Scripture.
Many throughout the years have put the bible verses to song.
I have joined them but concentrate on New Testament with no poetic additions.

Here a some examples from my Youtube channel.
Enjoy, and you'll find you can easily remember the words.

Galatians 5:1-5

Philippians 4:5

Titus 3:4-7

Revelation 7:14,15,17

Do you exclusively memorize all of your verses in from one translation or do you use multiple translations?
Hello OkieAllDay, I memorize verses and passages from one translation because that's what I was taught to do (when I went through The Navigators discipleship training program, which included their Topical Memory System).

It seemed a bit legalistic to me back then (all of the rules that we were required to follow to make the memorization of God's word easier, more effective and permanent), but in the end, I realized that they knew what they were talking about :oldthumbsup: The Navigators have been using the Topical Memory System to help train their missionaries for 90 years now .. Dawson Trotman founded The Navigators in 1933 .. and it has proven to be a very effective way to memorize Scripture :)

We used flash cards when I went through the training, but you can get the system as an Apple app or an Android app now too, and I would highly recommend doing so (if you end up using their system, that is).

God bless you!!

--David
p.s. - I continue to use the Topical Memory System to memorize new verses and passages, and to help me better retain the ones that I already know.

I think I have used whatever translation I was using at the time.
I didn't memorise Scripture much as a child, and I have, mostly, used the NIV ever since it came out, so I would use that.
Although there seem to be different versions of the NIV.

And the way I memorise verses is either to read them a few times, repeat them and then try to write them down without looking - or just to write them out, over and over again.
