How do you know when God is talking to you?

God speaks through His word by His Spirit.

I consider myself pretty liberal in my beliefs, and I never really knew how you're supposed to tell if someone is speaking to God. Maybe I'm wrong, but whenever someone tells me they just "spoke with God", I just think they're crazy.

Do a study in Scripture sometime of all the times God did speak to people.... you might be surprised in all the ways and means He used.

Yes, I do know scriptures…and God said He would NO longer speak to mankind as He did to Moses.

Deuteronomy 18
16 As thou desiredst of the Lord thy God in Horeb, when the assembly was gathered together, and saidst: Let me not hear any more the voice of the Lord my God, neither let me see any more this exceeding great fire, lest I die. 17 And the Lord said to me: They have spoken all things well. 18 I will raise them up a prophet out of the midst of their brethren like to thee: and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him. 19 And he that will not hear his words, which he shall speak in my name, I will be the revenger. 20 But the prophet, who being corrupted with pride, shall speak in my name things that I did not command him to say, or in the name of strange gods, shall be slain.

THat is not what the Scripture teaches, the rest of Scripture goes against that, you better look again.

21 And if in silent thought thou answer: How shall I know the word that the Lord hath not spoken? 22 Thou shalt have this sign: Whatsoever that same prophet foretelleth in the name of the Lord, and it cometh not to pass: that thing the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath forged it by the pride of his mind: and therefore thou shalt not fear him.
I am sorry if this is misunderstood. God is plainly explaining to them that since He will NOT be speaking to them any longer, then the signs of His voice in the prophets will be seen by signs. Unfulfilled prophecy for one thing.

You have a major problem dealing with the rest of Scripture if you think God stopped talking to them in Deut.

What about Isaiah? Jeremiah, and all the prophets?

What about the entire book of Acts and God speaking to them?

You really better try again.

Next time you need to pray out loud in a public situation, just whip out your cell phone. Anybody who notices you talking to God will be impressed. They may even ask for His number!

Excellent question! I will confess that there have been many times I thought the Lord was speaking to me (through the spirit, not audibly) but he wasn`t... Here we speak of the subjective, hard to be deemed sure... I do find it interesting, the heavy use of "God told me" among Pentecostal/Charismatics but have noticed many times that they contradict one another. God cannot be speaking to all of them...
