God wants you to spend time with Him and intimately communicate with Him, to enjoy fellowship with Him, to trust and follow Him, and to give your life meaning and purpose.

Just like everyone enjoys eating certain kinds of food, the Bible is food that will fill our spirits. The more we read the Bible, the more we will want to read it. You will be greatly blessed as you read and study God's Word. Ask God to help you understand His word.

Pray - to confess your sins, when you are in need, for someone else in need, pray for someone who doesn't know God, pray in thanksgiving. The more you pray and talk to God the more you'll develop a closer relationship with him.

If you haven't already done so, find a good church that is alive with the spirit. Fellowship is a wonderful support and encouragement and you will find that you learn alot of the sermons and alot from the friendships you build at church. You may also find your church as a Bible study group that you should participate in. If your church doesn't have one, maybe see about starting one with an elder of the church, or find another local church that offers one.

Just realize that you cant do it by yourself. You need Him. Only by the power of the Holy Spirit you can do it!

Romains 8

8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

As for where's a good place to start in the Bible, I think its always good to start in the New Testament.

Read the gospels first: matthew, luke, or mark and John.

(Because Matthew, Luke, and Mark are very similar, you can come back to the other two later. I tend to like Matthew the most.)

Then Acts, then Romans to Jude.

Finally, start at the beginning, Genesis.

As for the Holy Spirit, Jesus gives instructions in the Gospels: yes, simply ask God, believing.

For growth in the Spirit: some are given few talents, some more. Whatever growth one has is allotted by God. If you wish to grow, read the Scripture with a believing heart: the more you can accept of the Apostles and Prophets, the more of a reward you get. The reward for believing Jesus is eternal life.

Through faith comes the Holy Spirit, through the Holy Spirit working by faith - the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Faith - all good deeds and words come.

Hi B ,

Spiritual growth primarily occurs when we " feed " upon God's Word ( esp. The Gospel & Apostles' Doctrine - The New Testament ).

Once we've heard and understood what The Lord has to say to us by His Word , then we need to remember and apply those words to our thinking and daily decision making processes ; which brings forth fruit , or evidence of the wisdom and beauty of God's Counsel & Instruction .

Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
<-----> 1st Peter 2:1-3

Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
For he beholds himself, and goes his way, and straightway forgets what manner of man he was.
But whoso looks into the perfect law of liberty, and continues therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
<-----> James 1:21-25

There are basically two descriptions for what to do to receive the Gift of The Holy Spirit .

1. Believe and ask your Heavenly Father , based on Jesus' Testimony & Instruction .

And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened.
If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
<-----> Luke 11:9-13 ( Words of Jesus )

2. Turn away from what you know is wrong , and be baptized as an open act of belief + acceptance of Christ's Ability / Authority to cleanse us of our sins and resurrect us as new creatures , reborn / recreated in His Righteousness .

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. <-----> Acts 2:38

There's many things we all need to learn from God's Word , but since we're all individuals , the order in which we learn them can be somewhat different for each of us .

I'd recommend starting with Matthew ( the first book of The New Testament ) , and then continue reading straight through . Then perhaps read Psalms and Proverbs from The Old Testament . Then read The New again . Then read some more of The Old Testament , then read some of The New again , back and forth , with mostly reading The New .

I'd advise staying away from a lot of commentaries and structured Bible Study Programs , for it's more personal if one prays , asks God to speak to them through His Word , and then reads , and watches for for some word , some verse , some passage to " jump out at you " , then spend extra time studying those places , looking up the definitions of key words , and taking notes .

Also , seek to correlate one passage , with the other passages which speak on the same subject . This can be done through a word study , with a concordance ( which alphabetically lists every word in The Bible ) .

For example : say a passage which speaks of forgiveness jumps out at you with a deep sense of meaning and relevance . Using a concordance one can scan over a list of all the verses in The Bible which contain the word " forgiveness " and further explore the Biblical Witness of what forgiveness means , involves , and entails . ( Also one can expand the word study to compare other forms of the word - forgive , forgiven , etc . , and synonyms , like mercy , merciful , etc , and even antonyms like unmerciful , condemnation , etc. .)

Here is a link to a good source of free Bible Study tools , including many versions of the Bible , Strong's Concordance ( which is linked to The King James ) , and various Bible Dictionaries . It's best to put the most stock in what Scripture itself says , especially when The Lord has quickened His Word so that we perceive and understand it's emphasis , significance , and application .

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. <-----> 2nd Timothy 2:15

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
<-----> 2nd Timothy 3:15-17

It's a great gift to have a hunger for the wisdom and understanding of God's Word !

May The Lord Be Pleased to Bless !

Hello Bezel,

First of all I'm just praising God to hear of your hunger and thirst for Him!

Matthew 5:6 gives you this promise: "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." And this promise: "And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29:13)

So there's no doubt about it, you will gain a closer relationship with God as you seek for it.

I suggest that you start by spending time with God. In order to get to know anyone better, quality time with that person is important. So make daily time to read your Bible in the morning and evening (and afternoon if you can - like during lunch hour break at work).

Second, talk with him/pray to him daily. Tell him about your plans for the day and ask him to guide you. Praise him for all blessings (small or big) he gives you throughout the day. Call on him when you need help and direction. Let him know how you feel if something disappoints or discourages you. Make him your best friend.

Finally, do what he tells you to. You'll find out more and more what he requires us to do as Christians as you read the Bible. He will also speak to your heart in certain matters through his Holy Spirit and you will know it is his Holy Spirit telling you to do or not do certain things.

As for knowing that you have his Holy Spirit in you, he says you need only to ask for it and he will give it to you:

"how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?" (Luke 11:13)

"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you" (Matthew 7:7)

Once you ask, don't worry about whether you think you feel like you have it or not. Just accept by faith that you do have it just because He said you will once you have asked. Then as he leads you by His Spirit, obey its command. The more you obey, the clearer the Holy Spirit's presence in your life will become to you.

May God bless you on your wonderful journey with Him!

There are many good ways to improve your relationship with God. One thing you can do is find someone who's at a higher level than you, someone you can trust, and ask him to be your mentor. You want someone who knows more than you do so you can learn from him.

Second, the Holy Spirit gives us gifts. Tapping into these gifts is an excellent way for us to encourage intimacy with God. These gifts include supernatural gifts like the gift of healing, prophecy, etc. These gifts have not gone "extinct."

John 14:12
I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

This is Christ saying this! The man who raised the dead, calmed the seas, and changed water into wine is saying that we will do greater things! I can't even imagine how we can even top that.

Of course, if you want to know how to use these gifts, you first have to find someone who's willing to teach you, which brings us back to finding a mentor.

Third, spending time with the body of Christ encourages intimacy with God. This can happen by attending church, hanging out with people who honestly love God and have Biblical morals, and by attending interactive Bible studies.

Matthew 18:20
"For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."

Fourth, read the Bible in your own personal time. Begin with a prayer, asking God to speak to you and teach you. If you come across something you don't understand, write it down and ask someone knowledgeable.

Fifth, talk with God regularly, not just when you need something. Quiet yourself down, give yourself a few minutes alone to allow all the catchy jingles and the worries of your day to fade away and allow God to speak to you. He may communicate to you using any of your senses, so be open to whatever He may use.

You can and should talk to Him sometimes, but make sure you are not doing all the talking. God likes it when people spend time asking Him what's on His mind, what does He want to tell us, instead of just telling him what we want.

As for what you should read, I would recommend reading through the NT, starting with the Gospels. The OT is important, but it's much harder to understand.

How do you grow naturally? By doing the normal things that keep you alive. So it is spiritually, scripture, prayer, godo teaching, good relationships and above all learning how life and God are related, so we are ever expanding our knowledge and expereince of God.

Peace,

That's a good question. I think prayer is the key to a deep and intimate relationship with God. I was taught and believe that there are four modes or ways to pray: adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication. Adoration is to feel your love for God in prayer; Confession is to confess your sins and feel remorse to God in prayer; Thanksgiving is to feel thanks for the experience of life and its blessings in prayer to God; Finally, supplication is to be humble enough to ask God for help.

When I first became a follower of Jesus Christ I was all over the bible...I let inspiration take me wherever it wanted. I read parts of the OT such as Genesis, Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Jonah...I read parts of the NT such as parts of Gospels and the epistles. There is so much in that book of wisdom that can fill a whole life and speak to you specifically in whatever circumstances you find yourself in.

First pray and then crack open the bible and read wherever your finger falls.

God bless and good luck on your journey
