How do you explain what 'non-denominational' means to someone who asks?

I usually just explain that my congregation doesn't have a governing heirarchy, and that each decision affecting our congregation (hiring/firing staff, building projects, etc.) are made by our congregation and not by anyone else.

That is a good example! Thanks!

Wondering how each of us do this. I have a catholic background so I understand the confusion but not really sure the best easy way to explain this. My explainations end up way to involved.
I've always said to people, I am of no denomination......"I am a Christian".

Nondenominational refers to one assembly . It is self govenrning and has no direct ties to other assemblies . There is consciously shared shared set of doctrines or name with other assemblies . It is its own entity . It may have loose ties with other organizations in cooperative efforts and even some fellowship but nothing to do with discussion of what doctrines that they share .

Non-denominational simply means that it doesn't follow any specific doctrine from another denomination. For example, one may not specifically endorse speaking in tongues. It just doesn't follow any central hierarchy like someone said.

Those are pros. The cons would be the teachings of false gospels and doctrines. It is a great disguise for Satan to use in order to get his agenda going as well. The only problem I see with ND would be who knows what's in that church. It would be well advised to read the churches statment of faith and or articles of faith. I'm not trying to knock anyone, just be aware of what you're getting into. Satan is devious as we all know.

Satan sneaks into denominations too. Hence the creation of nondenominational churches. Yes, people should read the statements of faith, and look even closer at what the church goes by in reality. This should be at any church, denominational or non.

I say that I am a Christian, and I base my beliefs on the Bible, like Hypostatic already said.

Agree! If you pastor is a good pastor he will challenge you to check referenced YOURSELF to see if what he is telling you is truth from the Bible! He will not say 'take my word only for this'! He will also welcome challenge to his interpretation. Just like voting...know your leaders!!
