Hmm...just thinking more about Shulamit HaNotzrit. It makes really good sense why young men, as well as maidens, would be used as watchmen. Watchmen have to guard the vineyards day and night until the harvest. Since men have to work in the daylight hours, someone is needed to man the towers at night, while the men slept below. Plus, young people have better eyesight to see clearer at night. As well, young women in particular, have voices that carry more clearly in long distances, so that in the event that an intruder should come, they might call out much better to alert the local villagers to come to their aid. That could be the reason why Yirmiyahu only mentions maidens, young men and old men...the women and children would live in the villages (and thus not typically used as notzrim).

An understanding of the agricultural role of the "Notzer" is such a ripe metaphor! It makes so much sense why the followers of Yeshua adopted this as their name.

A Notzer is an "Watchman/Guardian" or "Observer" or "Preserver"...primarily of Vineyards. The "Vineyard", though, also is a metaphor of the temple. So a Notzer's job is to preserve the fruit, the "tithes", from being stolen by intruders. This is one role the Notzrim followers of Yeshua assigned themselves. One can easily extend this to "Torah". A Notzer "observes", "keeps/protects", or "preserves" Torah and thus guards the Torah-lifestyle of the community.

A Notzer can also be interpreted passively. It can mean "Preserved One". Here is where the apocalyptic role of the Notzer comes to play. He or she is a "preserved one" and will be protected by HaShem's hand during the tribulation.

Agriculturally, the role of a Notzer is not limited to keeping a watch. The term also has associations with cultivation in general. He or she is more properly a "Caretaker". A Notzer looks after the health of the vineyard. He or she makes sure it produces fruit. Yirmiyahu seems to also call them "Planters". It is they who also plant and raise the crop.

Workers in the field. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
When I read that, I started thinking about plowing a field, and about Samson saying, "If you had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle." (the heifer being his wife)
Yeshua is called the "last Adam"; the first Adam was put into the garden of Eden to dress it and keep it - he was a tiller of the soil.
So, the "Planters" and "Caretakers" are working in the garden of the last Adam?
"Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits." (Song 4:16b)
