  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How do we know . . . .

ah, how to find another way to slip Mary into the conversation.... you found it, well done.

Well, the discussion came up, but hey i will take that compliment and run with it. :D
I get em where i can. ^_^

did the 12 year old Jesus knowing the scriptures better than the collective Rabbi's in the temple escape you? You believe that knowledge was gleaned from Mary's teachings?

Hey hey hey...
DId you happen to read what i said? :p

Jesus learned from Mary - as every child did back in them there days. ;)

BUT Jesus might have learned the scriptures from Mary - but being God He knew what they meant.
;) ;) [2 winks]
I'm sorry, I cannot agree with you on that.

if Jesus depended on the teachings of his Mother, in the normative fasion of learning scripture, that would not have happened. He would have had a 12 year olds understanding of scripture.

Mary is NOT responsible for Christ's knowledge of Scripture.
I didnt say SSSHE taught what they meant - altho she knew hence she took on the role of Mother as she remained a virgin in the Temple vowed [as all those who were] to remain a virgin...
BUT lets not digress....

She taught the physical verses...
jesus KNEW what they meant.

Did i say it better this time?

Then what stroke of logic are you using that it was required of Mary to teach him the scriptures? If He being God knew what they meant? That's really, really silly.

definitely not digress.... seeing as one of us thinks that's absolute tommyrot.

I understand what you are saying. I reject it a silliness just the same.

no, I didn't.

I use what has been given us as divine revelation, and inspired in scripture.

I suppose if I was a 1st century diciple, I may have had to wait awhile, and depend on oral teachings. That is not the case.

there is a REASON it was recorded, and God inspired at that.
It was recorded so that in 1500 there was going to be SS that would come back and dispute oral tradition... that pre-existed SS?? Yeah that makes sense...

I wanted to chime in here...pardon me.

No, Jesus and the Jews were at odds with what the OT meant, as He plainly said they couldnt see the Messiah [Himself] in the scriptures..
Well, He chastised them for not 'seeing and being blind' to what the scriptures meant.

Basically, only the ones who could see it [Nicodemus as one] would know Who He was.

You have to read Wisdom...check this out;

Wisdom 2
1 For they have said, reasoning with themselves, but not right: The time of our life is short and tedious, and in the end of a man there is no remedy, and no man hath been known to have returned from hell: 2 For we are born of nothing, and after this we shall be as if we had not been: for the breath in our nostrils is smoke: and speech a spark to move our heart, 3 Which being put out, our body shall be ashes, and our spirit shall be poured abroad as soft air, and our life shall pass away as the trace of a cloud, and shall be dispersed as a mist, which is driven away by the beams of the sun, and overpowered with the heat thereof: 4 And our name in time shall be forgotten, and no man shall have any remembrance of our works. 5 For our time is as the passing of a shadow, and there is no going back of our end: for it is fast sealed, and no man returneth.

6 Come therefore, and let us enjoy the good things that are present, and let us speedily use the creatures as in youth. 7 Let us fill ourselves with costly wine, and ointments: and let not the flower of the time pass by us. 8 Let us crown ourselves with roses, before they be withered: let no meadow escape our riot. 9 Let none of us go without his part in luxury: let us everywhere leave tokens of joy: for this is our portion, and this our lot. 10 Let us oppress the poor just man, and not spare the widow, nor honour the ancient grey hairs of the aged.
11 But let our strength be the law of justice: for that which is feeble, is found to be nothing worth. 12 Let us therefore lie in wait for the just, because he is not for our turn, and he is contrary to our doings, and upbraideth us with transgressions of the law, and divulgeth against us the sins of our way of life. 13 He boasteth that he hath the knowledge of God, and calleth himself the son of God. 14 He is become a censurer of our thoughts. 15 He is grievous unto us, even to behold: for his life is not like other men's, and his ways are very different.
16 We are esteemed by him as triflers, and he abstaineth from our ways as from filthiness, and he preferreth the latter end of the just, and glorieth that he hath God for his father. 17 Let us see then if his words be true, and let us prove what shall happen to him, and we shall know what his end shall be. 18 For if he be the true son of God, he will defend him, and will deliver him from the hands of his enemies. 19 Let us examine him by outrages and tortures, that we may know his meekness and try his patience. 20 Let us condemn him to a most shameful death: for there shall be respect had unto him by his words. 21 These things they thought, and were deceived: for their own malice blinded them. 22 And they knew not the secrets of God, nor hoped for the wages of justice, nor esteemed the honour of holy souls. 23 For God created man incorruptible, and to the image of his own likeness he made him. 24 But by the envy of the devil, death came into the world: 25 And they follow him that are of his side.

Do you see what I see?
A very clear prophecy of Christ and the Jews who would not 'see Him for Who He is'.
You have made a conclusion I never made. I never said that Jesus and the Pharisees agreed on WHAT the Scriptures MEANT . . . but that they agreed that the Scriptures were the final and highest authority. On this they agree . . . otherwise Jesus' appeal to the scriptures would be met with challenge . . . and this doesn't happen. Rather they are shut down because of the appeal to the final authority.

This is what I meant by "seeing" . . . that they both saw the scriptures as authoritative . . . whether they agreed on the meaning or not.

Better?

I did not said you said it... I was thinking alound...
no, whatever to what you were thinking.

I've news for you. My Protestant Bible has a listing in it. It's suprisingly similar to this list! Oh, but wait, you can't LEARN such things with SS!

what bunk. As if Protestants are unaware of the quoting of OT scripture in the NT.

or, if cutting and pasting the list somehow speaks of intimate knowledge of the subject.

I've been looking at the list. It's mostly quibbles.

mmmhmmm.

Silliness eh?
Who taught Him to walk?
Who taught Him to be human in all apsects so He could fully be like us? Hmmm?

He didnt come down to earth to be instantaneously just the way He could be, but to become like us in EVERYTHING but sin. :)

So yes, His mother did teach Him.
BUT Being God He knew what they meant....whereas He was taught how to memorize them.

Reminder; there are heresies that deny He needed to be like us.

I was refering to the septuagint ... I would hope you would have known that...Also the cuting and pasting was not the point.. But Orhtodoxy can explain... better than me. I am sure. :)

Better?
I dont think so.
And here is why...
How come Christ did not tell the Jewish ppl to get out the scrolls to obey the word?
No He didnt, but He did in fact tell them to obey the chair of Moses. Didnt He?

So now tell me where the actual authority laid.
there is a WHOLE lot of assumption in your post.

I am all ears.
Tell me how I assumed and correct me.
You're refusing to get to the meat of the matter?

But I'm not going to... I'm tired of being beaten up. Perhaps some of you have forgotten that I am a human too.

BTW ~ I never spoke of myself being of any authority. I speak of The Church's authority.

Forgive me...:liturgy:
