  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, do you think you are a loser? Because really that's all that matters. Don't give me the power to let my opinion get under your skin.

I guess people have problems with others being completely honest. Perhaps I came off as judgemental, but I don't see a whole lot of great Christians or people that I would want to associate with that listen to metal. And the metal I'm talking about is the type of stuff that comes on headbangers ball on MTV2. Of course there are always exceptions, but they are few and far between.
What defines a "great christian" to you?

Your opinion doesn't get under my skin I don't give a flying hoot what you or anybody else thinks about my musical preferences. It's just that I didn't think that you realized how nasty and abrasive you were being.

I dont even like metal but your posts offend me. I dont see how anyone can think that they can determine wether a person is a 'good christian' (whatever that means) or wether their life is going anywhere by their musical tastes. Also I see you are trying to define what is music and what isnt. Stop. You wont win that one.

There are alot of lost people in the world, some of them are metalheads. Do you think any metalheads are going to be won over to christ by some country fan telling them their music isnt even real music? Me thinks not

And as a side note - musically, most contemporary christian music sucks.

In general it uses cliche tunes and puts them over simple chord structures with nothing that cant be easily imitated. Nothing requiring anywhere near as much skill as say a metal drummer.

While I'm not a fan of metal I prefer not to listen to music a 10 yr old with a months worth of guitar lessons could imitate either.

to be complete honest and frank with ya SB, you are probably dating a loser. I've never met a person that liked that type of music that was going anywhere with their life much less was a strong christian. Maybe this guy is an exception to what I've seen. You know him better than I do. Just do your best to show him the way to some better music. Don't let his music choices weigh you down, and move on if you have to.
That's quite a generalization. My bf really enjoys a wide selection of music-country, cont. Christian, Oingo Boingo, Red hot chile peppers (some of their stuff is really good), metal, rap, and the Siberian orchestra people.

Some of his tastes were deveolped during his drug-using days and he still enjoys the music. He has turned his life around completely in the last 10 years and has an awesome testimony. He is definitely going somewhere. He is a more honorable man than my last bf who preferred the traditional church music to the contemporary that his church was playing. So, you can't use music as the determining factor in someone's walk. He can't listen to a lot of this stuff in front of his dd and he doesn't even have the CDs around for her to see.

Music from our high school days provides a tie to the past. For my bf, there is a reminder of his brother who died in his arms. I really liked the Cars back in the day. Some of the stuff I wouldn't bother listening to anymore, it actually embarassed me when I heard the lyrics not too long ago.

I have actually wondered about this very same issue; not questioning his walk, but wondering if he would draw closer to God if he gave up some of the music, shows, etc. When my mom used to berate me for some of my music long ago, I always said I liked the beat, not the words. To say that words you repeat over and over will have no effect on you might be a little naive. You should at least entertain the possibility that they could. Things that we expose ourselves to can color our moods and decisions. I can think of certain conversations with co workers that affected my decision making skills later that night along with a wine cooler.

Also, ask him what Jesus would listen to. I highly doubt Jesus would listen to pity party music mixed in with a bunch of heavily distorted guitar sounds.

Oh, dear!

How about these pity-party lyrics?

"I am laid low in the dust."

"I am troubled. I am mourning all day long."

"The sorrows of hell surronded me."

"My heart is painful within me and I am terrified by death."

You can read a lot more of them in Psalms, where the above came from. God invites us to complain to Him, to lay under the broom tree and pray for death, as Elija did. We don't have to put on a sunny face and act happy when we are not.

To the OP - you are overreacting. This is not a big deal. Were he listening to music that exhorted violence, that would be a cause for concern.

Thanks, girl!

And for those of you who are, please stop firing the negative comments back and forth at one another. If you'd like to discuss music preferences and such, please do it somewhere else. We're getting off-subject.

And honestly, there's really nothing else to discuss regarding my situation, so I think I may just ask for the mods to close this thread. Thanks to all of you who have offered your helpful advice!
