  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How do I get my daughter to eat lunch at school?

My six year old daughter will not eat her lunch. At the begining of the year I sent a healthy snack to accompany her sandwich. Pretty soon only the snack was eaten so I stopped including it thinking she would be hungry and eat her sandwich. Now all she does is drink her juice and the sandwich has come home every day for a couple of weeks. Any suggestions?

What's her reason for not eating the sandwich? It sounds like she doesn't like it.

Try involving her in the choice. What does she want in her sandwich? Cheese? Tuna? Peanut butter? It's her who's going to eat it, which she won't if she doesn't like it.

I have to agree. If she's bringing it home everyday, it doesn't sound like she likes it. Is it just "a sandwich" or is it the kind of sandwich she likes? And does anyone really want a sandwich every single day? Is there something else you can send at least from time to time to give her some variety? Would it be better in the long-run for her just to buy her lunch at school?

You do need to ask her why.... but I'll tell you our story anyway!

Ds loves sandwiches, so when he started 1st grade I sent sandwiches everyday and he didn't eat them. Come to find out, he likes freshly made sandwiches only! LOL. Apparently they get soggy sitting his lunchbox all day and become unappetizing.

I did a few things.
I got him an insulated lunchbox and some little icepacks. I use containers instead of baggies. I make sandwiches on bagels instead of bread because they seem to be more resistant to "sog." I look for things other than sandwiches to pack -- crackers and slices of cheese is a good thing. Often I pack leftovers from dinner and that he enjoys eating cold. Diced ham and peas are good cold, for instance -- and then I also pack a slice of dry bread separately. I also include a snack or 2 as well -- he generally needs to eat a little something every 2 hours to be at his best in school, and the teachers understand and fascilitate that for all the kids.

Editting to add -- I am also teaching him to pack his own lunch at this point (he's in 2nd grade now) because if he is going to be continually very choosey than I think he needs to handle it himself pretty soon!

We have the same issue just beginning to crop up here. I try to vary the things I pack but it mostly comes down to plain old PICKYNESS. If it were up to her I'd pack 12 Oreos in the lunchbox and some soda. Once she told me she was embarrassed that her koolAid was blue and not red.

I just do the best I can with what we have in the kitchen. When she comes home from school famished I take out the uneaten sandwich (or whatever) from the lunchbox and she's hungry enough to eat it by then.

And no, I do not pack funky weird food in the lunchbox.

LOL! She'd hate me then -- I pack my son a water bottle to drink and that's it! He needs so much to drink throughout the day that I can't possibly pack enough. At least with just a water bottle, he can refill it at school as often as he needs to.

My daughter usually won't take a sandwhich. She will pack cheese and crackers, fruit, yougurt or whatever else thats in the kitchen that she thinks she might want. She does like a tuna sandwhich but we make it and put into a small container and send the bread, when she gets to lunch she just makes the sandwhich and then its fresh and not soggy.

We do have a running battle about why she can't take soda with her. I tell her that she gets enough soda and I am not going to look like a bad mother who only gives her kid coke. She takes juice or a water bottle.

Thank you for your advice! She's always been a picky eater but sandwiches are always her first choice (second is mac and chs but she doesn't have access to a microwave @ school). So I did the bagel thing yesterday she said she didn't like it but I think we'll try a different kind of bagel next time. She recently decided she doesn't like cheese  she even picks it off pizza. So today I send wheat thins and deli turkey, we'll see what happens. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one going through this. Sometimes she won't eat breakfast and then she doesn't eat lunch so by the time school is out it's been 21 hours! The thought of her at 14 scares me! Anyway I'll keep on keeping on and thanks again!

Oooh! Will she eat mac&cheese cold? Much to my surprise -- mine will eat it happily! I just add a few drops of milk and stir it before I pack it so that it isn't one solid block. And he loves it.

I also forgot to mention -- wraps! Whatever she usually likes in a sandwich, but in a tortilla wrap instead.
