I will agree that can be a serious issue. But the alternative, a person who has spent the last 40ish years denying and mentally shutting down sexual desires, may be even MORE problematic when it comes to establishing a healthy sexual relationship.

Kinda either/or, I guess.

I don't think that everyone who shuts down their sexuality has a problem starting back up. But there are people who do. Also if years have done by since a person was sexual, things may not be the same just because they have aged.
In general our sexuality is complex just like so many other areas of our life. It has physical, spiritual and mental aspects that aren't always easy to figure out. That's just the variation in the person, there there is the layer of what turns one one between the two people. I've read comments about how there isn't that much to learn about sex but I find its a life long learning thing.

I would suppose that depends on how deeply a couple decides to explore it.

that would be the position I'll likely be in. Someone else in this thread posted about many giving into desires and I almost wished I had because I've been driven mad. I take Lexapro for the sole purpose of killing my sex drive. It's an anti-depressant and it is a big side effect and the sole reason I take it. Now the physical drive is gone, the emotional has gone up. I can't win... :(
