Congrats guys, you made my "ignoramus" list!
Heather S. said:No. Actually it uses the word "we" because in ancient times, using a plural pronoun to refer to a single deity was a symbol of great power. The god of the Bible (especially of the Old Testament) was meant to be portrayed as huge and all-powerful. That is why the words "we" and "us" are used.

Are you sure she won't topple?
Yes and no. Elohim was typically used as a reference to many seperate deities. Christians pride themselves on being monotheistic, and describing the trinity as the Elohim, the author of the Bible would have been taking quite a bit of a stretch. After all, you wouldn't want to make anyone believe that Christians are polytheistic, right?Well actually together with the plural pronoun is the description of God as Eloheim
Could you give us supporting evidence for this statement please.Heather S. said:Elohim was typically used as a reference to many seperate deities.
I hate to burst your bubble, but the OT was written by people who don't believe in the trinity.A4C said:Well actually together with the plural pronoun is the description of God as Eloheim
There is no equivalent to this in English where it actually means more than one in a single being.
This is where we have the origin of the "trinity" -The Father (the creator) The Son (the Word of God) the Holy Spirit (the spirit of God)
Each of these was present within the one true God at creation -The Bible explains this to us.
It is that "triune" God the likeness of which we are made - ourselves being a three part being of spirit , soul, and body.
The fall of man certainly corrupted mankind but the good news is that through Jesus (a type of "second Adam) we are restored to the wholeness in which man was first created .

My bubble is not yet burst and I sure would like to know where you got that from.nvxplorer said:I hate to burst your bubble, but the OT was written by people who don't believe in the trinity.

Problem not solvedPraxiteles said:The OT was written by the Hebrews. The Trinity is a Christian concept.
Problem solved.
Are you sure we're talking about the same Bible?A4C said:My bubble is not yet burst and I sure would like to know where you got that from.

Why did "hebrews" refer to God as Eloheim (plural)
Who did the "hebrews" believe YHWH was?
What was the spirit that annointed the "hebrew" prophets?
In fact the supporting "evidence " for the Christian belief in a "trinity " actually comes from the OT
A very shabby attempt at an in depth study of the Bible I must sayPraxiteles said:Lots of words there.
The concept of the Trinity did not begin until the 1st century. The Hebrews and modern Jews did not and do not believe in the Trinity.
As to your question about their reference to Elohim (Gods): it seems clear that early Hebrews had a pantheon, but eventually trimmed their number of gods down to one.
Christians may indeed base their beliefs of the Trinity on the OT - but the fact remains that the writers of the OT had no concept of it.

If you check you Hebrew you will find that Eloheim is not a plural word for god but a description of the one true God As I said there is no real equivalent in English - the closest being "Gods"

Have you ever heard of an anachronism, A4C?A4C said:Ask one if He believes in Eloheim.

Why did "hebrews" refer to God as Eloheim (plural)
What a silly questionA4C said:Who did the "hebrews" believe YHWH was?
It was God's active force in the world, not some Christian trinitarian concept of GodA4C said:What was the spirit that annointed the "hebrew" prophets?
I can see that somebody hasnt spent much time on the NC forums on this siteA4C said:In fact the supporting "evidence " for the Christian belief in a "trinity " actually comes from the OT
