The arms and ammo industries earn 13.5 billion dollars (10 billion pounds approx) from sales and can buy almost all the politicians, that's called 'capitalism' and is the same system as Britain has had from Margaret Thatcher onward.

Not having that would leave a big hole in the economy and leave many politicians lacking the funds needed to hire consultants and thereby run a successful campaign.

Although 10 million guns are sold each year, there are only 85 gun related deaths per day. If you visit many parts of this site where there is an American majority you will learn that more people would die if there were no guns because other weapons would be used. Can you imagine what it is like to be bludgeoned to death with over ripe bananas?

The possibility that the British might actually be less violent because for decades the nation has had a security net for people who lose their jobs and until recently for people who are thrown out of their homes whereas the Americans are a lot more edgy and insecure you will hear is impossible because that is socialism and everyone knows it is wrong.

A pub fight in Britain will as likely as not end the next morning with little idea of what happened and a vague recollection perhaps of having won a fight (both contestants tend to remember that). In the US there is a risk the victor walking away will be shot in the back so he has to continue and ensure the loser is thoroughly knocked out with the risk of a fatal injury.

Yes I am a bit shaken, I saw my first armed ordinary woman, not police, just 40 something average woman. A day later I worked out that she was probably safer than a drunken man with a gun, but it was a shock that lethal weapons are so common place and ordinary.

A while back a young mother out shopping was shot dead when her toddler took her gun out of her handbag and it went off. A few people die each day in accidents, the gun lobby points out it would not happen if there was adequate training but that would be an impediment to buyers so would cut profits.

In some cases having a gun for self defence will save your life. But this must be balanced against accidental discharges or suicide. The thought that a home owner might have a gun will deter some burglars, but others will up the ante and go armed.

Reminds me of several years ago on holiday: an attractive young lady approached me, handed me her camera and asked me to photograph her standing next to the Wailing Wall (Jerusalem). If I had been a bit faster thinking, I should have offered to also photograph her with my camera (long before digital), just as a back up, and to post the picture to her (which would need her name and address). But I just meekly took her photo on only her camera. I wonder if the AK47 slung over her shoulder slowed my thinking.

I've realised what the problem with armed women is.

It is not that women are more dangerous, that is rarely the case, PMT excepted and someone running for US President also excepted.

Generally it should be safer with the women and no one else armed.

The problem is I have always thought of women as noncombatants, but now they are combatants people will start killing the women indiscriminately as well because you can never tell which ones are armed.

That's the odd thing about thinking, the subconscious reaches a conclusion days before the conscious catches up, if indeed it ever does.

I realise there is more to it then that, but that is a valid point.

Its only when you become vulnerable yourself that you realise the value of being able to defend yourself and start to understand why the elderly fear home invasion so much.
I myself am only 58 but I'm bed bound 24/7, I cannot follow the standard police advise here of calling them then either locking myself in a room or fleeing, I have to just lay here and take whatever comes.
I personally would feel a lot more comfortable with a small light weight .38, 9mm or .45acp beside me and the knowledge that I could use it if need be without fear of prosecution but the simple fact is that the only people who have access to such firearms here are the criminals and the police.
Even those who own licensed shotguns can't effectively use them for self defence or defence of their home as has been proved over recent years with people who have done so being prosecuted for murder/manslaughter with almost all who did so losing their shotgun license and having their guns confiscated.
Actually the prescribed safe method of storage precludes their use for self defence anyway as the guns have to be stored in one secure locked cabinet whilst the ammunition has to be stored elsewhere in another secure locked cabinet.


Some will say secure your home in a better manner but I cannot as I have to be able to allow entry via remote electronic control or no one can get to me in an emergency and the simple fact is it only takes one good kick to get through our doors unless they are dead bolted.

Putting aside the falsehood that capitalism was somehow invented by Thatcher (capitalism has throughout history been the default position of all economies)

£10billion certainly is a big number, however let's not overlook the fact that the UK govt has to spend £43billion a year simply servicing the national debt. That's a far larger scandal

I'm not sure why I wrote that.

When the wealthy people and or companies run the government that is plutocracy, and is a result of politics allowing wealth to buy influence.

It can be guarded against and is not a necessary result of very unequal accumulation of capital, but I'd guess is just frequently the result of very unequal accumulation as well as frequently the cause of very unequal accumulation.

Where the very rich decide to take a high level of control over both the government and also the population that can be called 'fascism', a highly authoritarian type of government, so I'm not yet convinced by claims that Donald Trump is a fascist.

in Post 1 I asked how can there be good customer service if customers can't come back and shoot at the windows of a drive through? Puzzled I am.

In Post 2 I pointed out that every politician needs money to hire people to tell them what to say, and how thoroughly unpleasant it is to be bludgeoned to death by over-ripe bananas.

the rest was totally serious of course up but the NRA position that guns fired by toddlers would be fixed by their umbrella claim that all we need is more training, I find amusing as it stands, particularly when a guy was shot when his dog stepped on a gun trigger, again, more training needed.

The military disaster at Dunkirk and the miraculous rescue of the British Army and some of the French Army was the reason the Home Guard was left in such poor shape. Something like 300,000 rifles and other weapons were destroyed on the beach to prevent them falling into German hands. Those were desperate days and yet the USA waited another two years to step up to the plate.

TBH, I wasn't even sure how your first post related to the thread title, but I thought I'd respond to the thread title (in post #12) since that's what caught my eye first.

Thanks Aldebaran, I was just feeling over the top with emotion and not sure whether to laugh or cry, so opted for the former, I'm not sure either would have made a lot of sense.
