House Republicans are trying to find ways to save money.

The House Ways and Means Committee released a menu-like list of possible options for funding the extension [of the Trump tax cut], which will likely benefit corporations and raise the national deficit by as much as $15 trillion. One solution would “eliminate the Head of Household filing status.”

The head of household status was designed to benefit single parents who take on the primary responsibility of caring for a dependent, allowing them to be charged lower rates on more income. For example, in 2025, the 12 percent tax bracket begins at $11,925 for single filers, but $17,000 for head of household filers, according to the Tax Foundation.

The change could save as much as $192 billion over 10 years, according to the list.

Another way to hurt children and workers.
Well, we HAVE to find ways to cut the "fat". Now, what is the "fat" can be debated.

The former president cut child poverty by half... but the Republican House failed to renew it.
Come to my city. I'm an officer of the food pantry guild. We give weekend backpacks to the neediest of the needy so that they will have food on the weekend and not come to school Mondays sick and malnourished.
Elon Musk could fund a program like this with a few hours of his billion dollar salary.
Let's feed children, not pamper millionaires.

It would be more sensible to look for cuts in some of the tax benefits to the very wealthy before going after those barely making ends meet.

and does Trump being in office mean you have to quit doing that? I know last week when school was canceled on Friday through much of north GA for snow at LEAST one county offered sack meals for the students so they would not miss a meal on Friday. Now, Biden was in office at that time, sure but who is in office would not mean they could not do it again this time ( It is quite likely that it will be canceled part of this week as well.)

Yet another horror story about what the republicans are supposedly considering. Which of course is making a life of misery for poor people and children. They're probably considering putting extra focus on depriving widows and orphans. They're pure evil and their sworn mission is to destroy the lives of anyone who's not rich and white to make rich white men richer.

If those children wanted help so badly, why aren't they lobbying and putting their money where their mouth is? You need to at least compete with the bribes of the super-wealthy to get heard. That's just good business.

We need to go to a simpler tax system .... either a flat tax or modified consumption tax ... the modified consumption tax is best I think, but no tax on food ... a modified consumption tax .. meaning there would still be tax structure for business and corporations etc.

The current progressive income tax system is not complicated. It's quite simple. The only thing that makes it complicated are deductions, which aren't even that bad for most people, especially after Trump's 2017 bill that increase the standard deduction and caused fewer people to itemize.

A consumption tax could potentially be more complicated because you'd have to define whether each product for sale was covered or not.

What would happen with such plans is that they'd skew the current tax burdens more heavily towards the poor.

Sounds regressive.

If the sales tax was the same percentage wise of everything that would be VERY simple.

Tax rates are easy. It doesn't matter if it's income tax, sales tax, whatever. It's easy to calculate. What complicates things are the exceptions and deductions. Oh, I can deduct the first 20,000 of income, and I can deduct my mortgage interest, and I can take a couple thousand credit for each kid, and a credit for having an electric car, and deductions for charitable giving, etc etc. If you're exempting food, you're making your consumption tax complicated because you now have to define "food" and determine whether each product for sale fits into that category. Are lollipops food? If so, what about raw sugar? Are hot meals exempted? Cold, ready-to-eat meals? etc

that is what I was saying no exceptions if there is a 5% sales tax that goes for everything from rice to houses and boats.

I think the point was they are barely managing now and need help so they aren't food insecure over the weekend. Further cuts to those families, as is being proposed, would only exacerbate the problem.
