The House on Friday passed a bill to ban assault weapons, securing a significant victory for Democrats following a spate of mass shootings across the country and marking the first time lawmakers have approved a prohibition on the popular firearms in more than two decades.

The legislation, titled the Assault Weapons Ban of 2022, cleared the chamber in a 217-213 vote.

A poll conducted by Fox News in June found that 63 percent of registered voters support banning assault weapons.

Obviously, it doesn't have much chance in the Senate.

Republicans have long supported gun manufacturers and assault rifle owners. Nations with stricter gun control laws have fewer murders. Families with a gun in the house are more likely to be shot by another family member than by an armed intruder. Someone who owns a gun(s) is more likely to commit suicide with a gun than to shoot a burglar or home invader in self defense.

Assault Weapons have already been banned for a LONG time (since 1934) when it became illegal to purchase a fully automatic weapon like a Thompson Submachine Gun or an AK-47 Carbine or an M-14 Carbine.

What we have today is a “redefining” of terms to ban guns that “look scary” as a placebo for avoiding fixing any of the real problems. As an aside, criminals can still get REAL Assault Weapons, so the laws solve NOTHING. They just restrict which models of semi-automatic rifle (1 shot per pull of the trigger) can be sold and which cannot.

What these laws do achieve is to increase the distrust between law-biding gun owners and the US Government regulators (and LEO), resulting in decreased cooperation at a time when greater cooperation would be beneficial.

Some facts on Columbine:

Time of shooting: 11:19 to 12:08 (49 minutes)
Weapons used:
  • 9mm Pistol (TEC-9)
  • 9mm Carbine (Hi-point 995)
  • Pump Shotgun (Savage 67H)
  • Double-Barrel Shotgun (Stevens 311D)
  • NONE of these types of weapons would be banned by any of the proposed “Assault Weapon” bans, so the Ban would not prevent another Columbine.

Rounds fired by perpetrators = 188
  • 94 rounds per shooter (average)
  • 2 rounds per minute.

rate of fire for semi-auto pistol = 1 aimed shot per second
  • change pistol magazine = 1 second
  • Shots possible in 10 minutes = 545

rate of fire for revolver = 1 aimed shot per second
  • Reload revolver = 6 seconds
  • Shots possible in 10 minutes = 300

rate of fire for pump shotgun = 0.7 aimed shot per second
  • Reload shotgun = 5 seconds
  • Shots possible in 10 minutes = 250

rate of fire for bolt action rifle = 0.25 aimed shot per second
  • change rifle magazine = 1 second
  • Shots possible in 10 minutes = 146

rate of fire for musket = 1 aimed shot per 20 seconds (including loading)
  • Shots possible in 10 minutes = 30
  • A Columbine sniper with a flintlock rifle could have fired 147 shots during the 49 minute massacre.

Banning guns that look “scary” is not the answer.

Wrong. The only thing that would do as punishment legal gun owners
Okay let’s “repeal & replace” it.
The Right of the People to bear arms will be Regulated by the Congress and by the legislatures of the several states.

Isn’t that the system in effect since 1934?

I think the true definition is Assault Rifles, they are full auto and have been banned since 1934. Assault Weapon is a general term for anything over 10 rounds that's semi automatic.
