Personally, i hope the senate doesnt pass it. I hope for a law that will require it to be more humane, but not ban it all together

it's still slaughter.......Anything that involves a bolt gun to the head and bleeding out will never be humane. The simple answer, Yes. One thing ya'll gotta remember is that horses are LIVESTOCK, not pets. Currently our market is being flooded with horses and if we lose our slaughter houses then the price of horses is going to hit rock bottom.Sabina41 said:Why wouldn't you want them to pass it? Are you afraid we're suddenly going to be overburdened and innudated with excess horses?
that would be nice, but there are WAY to many people who wont. It's just like the dog and cat population, the only difference is we have animal shelters that are willing to put down animals that they can't adopt out. Don't get me wrong, i don't LIKE the idea of putting animals to sleep or horse slaughter, but i see it as a necessary evil.Sabina41 said:Maybe if horse owners in this country followed reasonable breeding practices and didn't just breed every ho-hum mare in their backyard paddock we wouldn't have an overflow of ponies and horses.
Yeah, that would be nice, but i don't see it happening. Most racehorse trainers want their horses to do one thing, run. Then again that are a lot of people out there that own OTTB.Sabina41 said:Also, if the racing industry practiced a little bit of the same wisdom or took just a little bit of time to retrain their animals so they weren't all nutso straight off the track, people would take an interest in them as well.
i agree that this is a major problem, but not the only problem.Sabina41 said:Stop the use of drugs that exploit horses and perpetuate their slaughter (i.e. Premarin and PMU babies).
that would be nice, but not everyone has the resources to do it. Take myself for example. I'm a college student, i have no money all of the time and any money that i do get goes straight into savings to try to pay off my loans, or to pay for next year. Some horse owners don't have the land available to them.Sabina41 said:Knowledgable horse owners themselves should step up and assist rescue organizations in their area. There is a major horse auction located about three hours from my house. One of my mom's good friend's runs a horse rescue and drives up there to buy horses from the kill pen just to save them and give them a second chance. Then my mom fosters them at her house, rehabilitates them, and cares for them until they're adopted. Other horse owners should be doing the same.
i agree, every kind of horse ends up in the slaughter houses. I also agree that horses aren't any more disposable than a dog or cat, but millions of dogs and cats get put to sleep each year, we're going to lose this option with horses.Sabina41 said:It's not just the old, sick, injured, worn-out etc. that end up at slaughter, it's children's lesson ponies, back yard horses, show horses, thoroughbred race horses, all types and they're all worth saving. Horses are no more disposable than your dog or cat. Do you think it's right to just abandon your dog or cat at a shelter whenever you feel like just getting a new one? It's the same for horses. Just dumping your horse at the closest auction so you can get an upgrade is unacceptable. Equestrians make a deal with their animals to care for them until death or find them a suitable home if need be, the same way we do our dogs and cats.
more humane treatment in the shipping and before they get killed.Sabina41 said:Oh and, more humane??it's still slaughter.......Anything that involves a bolt gun to the head and bleeding out will never be humane.

This country has been moving toward this eventuality since the fifties when the slaughter of mustangs was halted. And guess what happened- they're still there and BLM developed an adoption program and keeps the numbers managable. Maybe if horse owners in this country followed reasonable breeding practices and didn't just breed every ho-hum mare in their backyard paddock we wouldn't have an overflow of ponies and horses. Also, if the racing industry practiced a little bit of the same wisdom or took just a little bit of time to retrain their animals so they weren't all nutso straight off the track, people would take an interest in them as well. For those of you who are in the horse industry (whether it's training, breeding, showing, or just hacking around on the trails) you know what kind of impact this will make on the horse industry and chances are it isn't going to be pretty.
