  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Ring.

I have no idea why, but after the first time I watched it I was absolutely freaked out. The faces of those people she killed were just weird and creepy.
After???
I couldn't even wait that long. That face in the closet the one daughter made, haunted me for the longest time.
Half way through I literally cut the movie off to get ahold of myself. :timeout:

It isn't a horror movie, but Jacob's Ladder can really get under your skin.
That is one of the few movies I appreciate for the creepiness of it.

Though it still doesn't come close to Susperia.

I am something of an elitist when it comes to horror flicks. Good ones are some of the best film there are, but they are also the rarest. I have seen precious few that I would consider even decent.

I am playing through the game Silent Hill 3 right now, though it is a game, the way it is designed is very much as an interactive movie or story with very little focus on combat. Fifteen minutes playing that with no lights on in an empty house at midnight will test the limits of your nerves.

Critique of some commonly mentioned "scary" movies

The Ring - Good atmosphere and one of the best movies I have seen at startling you, but not that scary nor creepy. It was rather predictable for the most part. After the little boy said "You helped her?" I couldn't stop laughing for the rest of the movie. It bugged everyone in the theatre around me.

Sixth Sense - Very entertaining. Not scary except for the one part where the kid gets locked in the attic, that was well done.

Signs - ... The only moderately disturbing part of this was where the alien walks across the TV screen. Apart from that it was predictable and not scary.

Exorcist - The little girl was the most dull part of the movie. Watch for the images that appear on flat surfaces just before the camera changes. Those scared me.

The Others - Towards the end it got quite hackneyed and dull but some of the parts with the locked rooms and candles were genuinely scary.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Suspenseful and a bit scary. A bit too silly to have a really lasting or deep roated effect.

oh man. when i was watching the ring, we put it on a big screen in a nice dark room. and you know in the video when a fly is in the tape, then it appears on the tv. well that happened to us. it was the craziest thing!!! a fly appeared on the big screen, then started flying around the room! we were all waiting for the phone call after the movie finished!

i agree with the most of your critique revolutio...

i've never actually watched a movie and been properly scared. the movies i listed were great for the suspense and the build up. and there were moments that made me jump - especially signs. they were entertaining and i like the ride you go on.

some of the times i've been afraid to leave the room have been movies that weren't horrors but more thrillers and real life stuff. like serial killer movies or mentalcases that stalk you around your home....

i'd love to get really scared watching a movie, but i've yet to be truly terrified. blair witch was a major let down. after the hype had died down, i watched it a couple of years later for the first time and it sucked. i didn't even get the ending?! ah well.

if anyone truly knows of a scary movie that leaves you terrified and panicking, not wanting to walk round the corner for fear of meeting jason or freddy... then please tell me! otherwise i'll just pretend to be scared and laugh at all the screams.

Did you ever play Fatal Frame or Fatal Frame 2?...I bought FF2 and can't even play it...I have to have my brother play it, all I can do is watch (sometimes not even that). Its a really creepy game...the beginning movie sequences about knocked me off my chair.

Revolutio...have you ever seen The Eye? It's an Asian film, but I was able to find it at a local video rental place and it has English subtitles. If you haven't seen it, it's a must. I'm a BIG horror movie fan myself, not a whole lot bothers me except for this movie. I had never been so freaked out in my life  ...I had to stop the movie half-way through to regain my bearings. I couldn't sleep in my room upstairs for 2 weeks because of it  ...I have a very active imagination, and thought of the worst possible scenerio if I slept alone. So if you haven't seen this...you have to.

What you are doing is braceing yourself for the movie. Instead of getting yourself sucked into the movie, you actually withdrawing your emotions from it.
Anyone can do that, the trick is letting yourself get caught up in the movie.
Untill you learn that, you will find yourself saying "ohh movies suck, they aren't what they used to be", and this is simply not true at all, not even close.

The Blairwitch project you really should have seen it on opening night, in the theaters. Their is an energy watching a movie with other people.
It scared me pretty good, but I never watched it again. Besides the suspense of wether it was real or not, it was boring.

Cube...that was a bizarre but scary movie. Cube 2 was just too bizarre really
I was just talking with someone last night about the weirdness of Cube, actually.

Evil Dead is great... cheesy horror lives on.

The Haunting ruined my attraction to big beautiful houses. Some of the parts made me

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet, but Phantasm made me wet my pants. The Good (The 'Cuda), The Bad (The Ball), The Ugly (The Tall Man). The sequels got kinda cruddy as they went along, but the sense of dread stayed.

Halloween, Halloween II and Nightmare on Elm Street are cheesy by todays standards, but still heebie jeebie inducing.

The movie titled Zombie from the late 1970s that was originally released as an X (it would be an R now) scared other things out of me. I would not recommend it for Christian viewing.

Finally, an Mitch Peleggi fans from his X-Files days, might enjoy him in a cheesy, but watchable horror movie called Shocker.

it's probably not in the horror movie genre, but the scariest movie i've ever seen was Fear. Not the one with mark whalburg (sp?) or whatever. At least it was way scary at the time and the setting. i get super scared with scary movies...i let myself get caught up...it's great fun.
