  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've been watching horror movies for so long....none of them that I can remember ever scared me, a few managed to get my imagination going so that I could get caught up in the plot enough to be on the edge of my seat, but none ever scared me.

Some that got me to the edge of my seat...Silence of the Lambs, Alien and Halloween.

I agree on Alien. Although one could argue that Alien is not really in the horror genre. Technically, Alien belongs to the Sci Fi genre. Anyway, Alien does the 'horror' bits very well indeed. The direction is first class and one has to give credit to the actors for giving such a superb performance, Sigorney Weaver included! ;)
What makes Alien so special? I would argue that the most special thing about Alien is the way they choose to portray the Alien itself. Its given an almost human quality which is what makes the horror parts work so well. You see, when one watches a film that, in essence, portrays humans confronting a very real social issue of neglecting or indeed victimising people who are alien to ourselves, the horror works that much better because we are forced to confront the social message in such a way.

Jaws is a brilliant film. What makes the film so brilliant is not the shark itself ;) or even the portrayal of violence in Spielberg's own special way but what makes the movie is actually the acting. The horror and the fear was written on the faces of the main actors. This is what sold the film to the audience. About 3/4 of the film is just the actors portraying their fear, especially when they are trapped on the boat, the other 1/4 is negligible.
I completely agree, the three main characters were excellent. Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss gave top notch performances. The entire cast was good too, not to leave anybody out, just excellent acting all around. The sequels were another matter...

Stephen King is good horror too, particularly the books before they are translated to film.

I've seen a ton of horror movies and none of them have scaried me terribly. There have been a few scenes (very few ;) ) that have made me jump, but overall nothing has just totally creeped me out.

My favorite horror film would have to be the newest Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I'm a big fan of the original, but the newest is really good! :)

The Scariest Movie i have ever seen is "the mothman prophecies" Has anyone seen it?

Its is based on a true story and i definatly think that some demon activity went on.
When i saw it, it just made me feel really awful inside... After seeing it i didnt even feel like talking.

The figures they saw that were cause ign the trouble were DARK tall angel looking figures... dark angels!?.... fallen angels...?! Demons??

There was somehting VERY unsettling about the movie.... which is weird cos i ussually am unaffected by scary movies.

Has anyone see it? What did you think about it?

Mara :)

P.S I thought the Ring was lame. It didnt scare me at all.

This thread is great. I was thinking my love of scary movies was odd, but now I find myself in good company.

Mothman Prophecies is good in an Art Bell-something's wrong below the surface type of way, Jocob's Ladder is too.

The original Dawn of the Dead, and other Night of the Living Dead movies, was good in a survivalist us or them type of way.

Uncle Sam, Killjoy, Evil Dead series, Dentist, Ice Cream Man (one of my kid's favs), Halloween 3, Silent Night Deadly Night (boob warning) are good fun campy-scary movies.

Stigmata, Omen I-III, Exorcist I, are actually scary!

Creep Show series 1-2 are good clean fun scary short stories.

Stephen King's short stories are among my favorites as his novels are hit and miss with me.

The ring definitely...the japanese version is worse!
Battle Royale...more gore really than horror but still worth a look
The nightmare on elm st...the 1st one...it went down hill! did you know that was Johnny depps first film?....he looked so young in that film....I watched it last night.

House on the haunted hill was interesting but not scary really.
Sorry I got bored with Blair witch...not scary good concept though

No, actually I don't, what are you talking about. I have seen this movie 3 times.
