What are some of the ways the Orthdox honor the Mother of God?  And is the Hail Mary used in the Orthodox Church?  Also, I would like to hear an Orthodox perspective on the Rosary (which I know wasn't introduced until a while after the Schism).

Find an Orthodox Church near you this Lent season and drop in on one of their Friday night Akathist services - it's beautiful! Or look for the text on-line to a service honoring the Theotokos.

I spent many years as a Protestant resenting what I perceived as "Mary worship" by the high churches. But oh how much I was missing! It was her free will that allowed her to bear our Saviour - God didn't MAKE her. She was the "new Eve" - where Eve said no to God, Mary said yes and made it possible for us all to have salvation. She SHOULD be honored and remembered, at all times! If we love Christ, we should love His mother, too!

Anyway, do check into that Akathist service. It's so beautiful. I can't believe how much I was missing, for so many years!

when possible, the night before the Diving Liturgy we sing the midnight praise.  This is an ancient prayer that was pretty much complete by the 4th century or so.  It starts off praising God for delivering Israel from Egypt, is full of prayers, and ends by going through all the types of the Virgin from the Old Testament.  I have a Catholic friend who's joined us for it 2 or 3 times, and he found it very helpful for talking to Protestants about Mary from a Scriptural point of view.  You can listen to the midnight praise here in mp3 or real here: http://tasbeha.org/audio/tasbeha.html#stanthony-monastery-tasbeha .  The Sunday Theotokia is the part I was talking about, Hail to you Mary also applies.  There are prayers to her all through it too.  This recording is all in English (usually we do the repetitive parts in Coptic), and is the way it's done during the season from Easter to Pentecost.

During the raising of the Evening Inscense and the Morning Inscense (in the evening before the Liturgy, before midnight praise, and in the Morning as the start of the Liturgy) we sing doxologies to the saints.  Here are the ones for St. Mary:

said: Hail to you! We ask you, O saint full of glory, the ever-virgin Mother of God, the Mother of Christ, offer our prayers unto your beloved Son, that He may forgive us our sins. Hail to the holy Virgin, who has brought forth unto us the True Light, Christ oru God. Ak the Lord on our behalf, that He may have mercy on us and forgive us our sins. O Virgin Mary, the holy Mother of God, the faithful advocate for all mankind, intercede on our behalf before Christ, Whom you have brought forth, that He may forgive us our sins.

Introduction to Doxologies (sung): Hail to you, O virgin,/ The very and true queen./ Hail to the pride of our race,/ Who has borne to us Emanuel.
We ask you, remember us,/ O our faithful advocate,/ Before our Lord Jesus Christ./ That He may forgive us our sins.

First Doxology:
(morning)
Blessed are you, O Mary,
The prudent and the chaste,
The second tabernacle,
The treasure of the spirit,

The pure turtle-dove,
That declared in our land,
And brought unto us,
The Fruit of the Spirit--

The Spirit of Comfort
Which came upon your Son,
In the wters of the Jordan,
As in the type of Noah.

For Noah's dove
Has declared unto us
The peace of God
Towards mankind.

Likewise, you--our hope,
The rational turtle-dove--
Have brought Mercy unto us,
And carried Him in your womb.

To wit Jesus, our Lord,
The Only-Begotten of the Father,
Was born of you unto us,
And set free our race.

Let us all declare
With all our hearts,
And with our tongues too,
Procaliming and saying,

"O our Lord Jesus Christ,
Make in us a sanctuary
For Thine Holy Spirit,
Ever glorifiying Thee."

Hail to you, O Virgin,
The very and true queen.
Hail to the pride of our rce,
Who has borne to us Emmanuel.

We ask you, remember us,
O our faithful advocate,
Before our Lord Jesus Christ,
The He may forgive us our sins.

(Evening Inscense)
The adornment of Mary,
In the highest heaven,
At the right hand of her Beloved,
Asking Him on our behalf.

As David has said,
In the book of hte Psalms,
Upon Thy right hand, O Kind,
Did stand the Queen.

Solomon hsa called her,
In the Song of Songs,
"My sister and my spouse,
My true city Jerusalem."

For he has given a type of her
In diverse high names,
Saying, "Come out of your garden,
O choicest aroma."

Hail to you, O Virgin,
The very and true queen.
Hail to the pride of our race,
Who has borne to us Emmanuel.

We as you, remember us,
O our faithful advocate,
Before our Lord Jesus Christ,
That He may forgive us our sins.

(Then the Doxology of the Heavenly, then the Doxologies for the saints of the Church, and of the day)

(The Ending of the Doxologies)
Be our advocate
In the highest where you are,
O lady of us all, the Mother of God,
The ever-virgin Mary.

Ask of Him Whom you have borne,
Our Good Saviour,
To take away our afflictions
And accord to us His peace.

Hail to you, O Virgin,
The very and true queen.
Hail to the pride of our race,
Who has borne to us Emmanuel.

We ask you, remember us,
O our faithful adovcate,
Before our Lord Jesus Christ,
That He may forgive us our sins.

Every time the creed is recited except during the Liturgy (so 3 times on a typical Sat evening+Sun) the introduction is said:

We exalt you, the Mother of the True Light. We glorify you O saint and Mother of God, for you brought forth unto us the Saviour of the whole world--He came and saved our souls.
Glory to Thee, our Master, our King, Christ--the pride of the Apostles, the crown of the martyrs, the joy of hte righteous, the firmness of the churches, the forgiveness of sins.
We porclaim the Holy Trinity in One Godhead. We worship Him. We glorify Him. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Lord bless. Amen (Creed)

There are verses in the Verses of the Cymbols, and in the Hymn of the Intercessions, and in most seasonal Gospel and Epistle responses for the Virgin.

In the 7 Canonical Hours (the Agpeya), each hour has a Gospel reading, and after the reading there are vereses.  Every 3rd verse is a prayer to or concerning the Virgin.  You can read the prayers in context at www.agpeya.org .  Here  they are:

(prime)
" You are the honored Mother of the Light; from the risings of the sun to its settings praises are offered to you, O Theotokos, the second heaven, as you are the bright and unchanging flower, and the ever virgin mother; for the Father chose you, and the Holy Spirit overshadowed you, and the Son condescended and took flesh from you. Wherefore, ask Him to give salvation to the world which He created, and to deliver it from all tribulations. Let us [that we may] praise Him a new praise, and bless Him, now and forever and unto the ages of all ages. Amen."

(3rd = 9:00)
"O Theotokos, you are the true vine who bore the Cluster of Life, we ask you, O full of grace, with the apostles, for the salvation of our souls. Blessed is the Lord our God. Blessed is the Lord day by day. He prepares our way, for He is God of our salvation."

"Whenever we stand in Your holy sanctuary, we are considered standing in heaven. O Theotokos, you are the gate of heaven, open for us the gate of mercy."

(6th = noon)
"Since we have no favor, nor excuse, nor justification because of our many sins, we, through you, implore to Him who was born of you, O Theotokos, the Virgin, for abundant and acceptable is your intercession with our Savior. O pure mother, do not exclude sinners from your intercession with Him whom you bore, for He is merciful and able to save us, because He suffered for us to deliver us. Let your compassion speedily reach us, for we are exceedingly humbled. Help us, O God, our Savior, for the glory of Your name. O Lord, deliver us and forgive us our sins for the sake of Your holy name."

"You are she who is full of grace. O Theotokos, the Virgin, we praise you, for, through the cross of your Son, Hades fell down and death was abolished. We were dead but we are raised and became worthy of eternal life, and gained the delight of the first Paradise. Therefore, we thankfully glorify the immortal Christ our God."

(9th = 3:00)
" O, You who was born of the Virgin for our sake, and endured crucifixion, O Good One, and abolished death by Your death, and manifested resurrection by Your resurrection, O God, do not turn away from those whom You have created with Your own hands, but manifest, O Good One, Your love for mankind. Accept from Your mother an intercession on our behalf. Deliver, O Savior, a humble people. Do not leave us to the end, and do not forsake us forever. Do not break Your covenant, and do not take away from us your mercy, for the sake of Abraham, Your beloved, Isaac, Your servant, and Israel, Your saint."

" When the mother saw the Lamb and Shepherd, the Savior of the world, hung on the Cross, she said while weeping, “The world rejoices in receiving salvation, while my heart burns as I look at Your crucifixion which You are enduring for the sake of all, my Son and my God.”"

(Vespers = 5:00)
"Every iniquity I did with prudence and activity, and every sin I committed with eagerness and diligence, and of all torment and judgement I am worthy. Therefore, prepare for me the ways of repentance, O Lady the Virgin; for to you I appeal, and through you I seek intercession, and upon you I call to help me, lest I might be put to shame. And when my soul departs my body attend to me, and defeat the conspiracy of the enemies, and shut the gates of Hades, lest they might swallow my soul, O you, blameless bride of the true Bridegroom. "

(Compline = 6:00)
"O pure Virgin, overshadow your servant with your instant help, and keep the waves of evil thoughts away from me, and raise up my ailing soul for prayer and vigil, for it has gone into a deep sleep. For you are a capable, compassionate and helpful mother, the bearer of the Fountain of Life, my King and my God, Jesus Christ, my hope."

(Midnight)
(First watch)
"You are the rampart of our salvation, O Theotokos the Virgin, the mighty and impregnable fortress. Abolish the counsel of the adversaries, and transform the sorrow of your servants into joy. Fortify our city, defend our governors, and intercede for the peace of the world; for you are our hope, O Theotokos."

(2nd watch)
"The Heavens bless you, O full of grace, the Bride who was never married. And we, too, glorify your incomprehensible giving birth. O Theotokos, the mother of mercy and salvation, intercede for the salvation of our souls."

(3rd watch)
"O the reasonable gate of life, the honored Theotokos, deliver from hardships those who, in faith, take refuge in you, so that we might glorify your immaculate birth of Christ for the salvation of our souls."

There are also Communion hymns sung during Communion.  I'll try to find one frome the Kiak (~Advent) Midnight praises next week.

Hey jukes,
I found this: (it's from Fr. Alexander Gumanovsky, a spiritual son of Fr. Zosima, a spiritual son of St. Seraphim of Sarov)

"... I forgot to give you a piece of advice vital for salvation. Say the "O Hail, Mother of God and Virgin 150 times, and this prayer will lead you on the way to salvation. This rule was given by the Mother of God herself in about the eighth century, and at one time all Christians fulfilled it. We Orthodox have forgotten about it, and St. Seraphim has reminded me of this Rule...He describes many miracles which took place through praying to the Mother of God and especially through saying 150 times the 'O Hail, Mother of God and Virgin'. If being unaccustomed to it, it is difficult to master 150 repetitions daily, say it 50 times at first. After every 10 reps. say the Our Father once and 'Open unto us the doors of thy loving kindness, O blessed Mother of God, in that we set our hopes on thee, may we not go astray; but through thee may we be delivered from all adversities, for thou art the salvation of all Christian people.' ..."

There is a rule developed by Bishop Seraphim Zvezdinsky that has remembrances of different events for each decade. (Sound familiar?) I won't go into them all, it's 15 decades, but it is events from the birth of Mary through Pentocost and the Assumption of Mary.

"Thus we can see that the Rosary is a completely Orthodox form of devotion to our Lady.
Those who follow the Western tradition should follow one of the standard forms, i.e. the opening consisting of the Sign of the Cross followed by the Lord's Prayer; or "O Lord, open Thou my lips, and my mouth shall show forth thy praise" and the "Glory be..." followed by the Lord's Prayer and the Angelic Salutation (three times). After this, either 5 or 15 decades (each preceded by the appropriate "mystery") are recited; and after the decades, the conclusion consisting of the Regina Coeli and the appropriate collect.
Those who follow the Eastern tradition could very easily follow the form cited above, ending with the hymn, "It is truly meet to call thee blessed."
What is essential is to daily seek the intercessions of the Mother of God, so that in drawing closer to her, we may be drawn closer to her Son, our Savior, Jesus, with whom she now reigns eternally in Heaven."

I also saw something by St. Seraphim himself, and it spelled out the prayers, but I can't put my hands on it right now.

Found the hymn I wanted to post from Kiak (~Advent) Midnight Praise, probably this doesn't interest anyone but me, but oh well :) :

"The Fiery Bush"
refrain:
The fiery bush that Moses
Had seen in the wilderness,
Burning with fire from within--
And the bush was not sonsumed--

Is a figure of the blessed Mother of the Light,
Who carried the Divine Ember
Nine full months in her womb,
With a perpetual virginity.

+++

I open my mouth and speak
About the hidden mysteries,
And honour Mary the Mother of the Light:
Blessed are you among women.

Gabriel announced to her
The incarnation of the Word--
She carried her Lord in her womb:
Blessed are you among women.

David, your father, spoke of you,
With prophetic sayings--
The God of gods became yoru son:
Blessed are you among women.

You are the mother of your Creator,
Who came to save the human race--
He came and dwelt in your womb:
Blessed are you among women.

+++

The forgiver of all sins,
The source of all blessings,
He loved our race and took our form:
Blessed are you among women.

He bowed down the heavens,
And descended to earth,
While still in His Father's bosom:
Blessed are you among women.

Of all people, who has obtained
What you received, O Mary?
All generations proclaim and say:
Blessed are you among women.

O Virgin Mary, we bless you,
And praise by day and night
The One Who chose your goodness:
Blessed are you among women.

brewmama: Is it common for Eastern Orthodox to pray the Rosary, I'd never heard of this? When did the Rosary start, was it after or before the ~1054 schism? Is this done instead of or in addition to praying the Jesus Prayer on beads? (I'm in no way trying to critisize, I'm just curious)

This is a good link. It gives the history of the Rosary as well as the use of the Rosary by the Greek and Russian Orthodox Churches. The Rosary as we know it today started in the 1500s although it had its origins well before the Schism.

My dearest joy in Christ:

I was taught that St. Dominic gave the western Church the Rosary in the early 13th Century.

The Orthodox Hail Mary (from the Antiochian Service Book) is as follows:

"Hail! Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, O Virgin Theotokos: Blessed art Thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, for thou has borne the saviour of our soul."

The Orthodox do not like to meditate with mental images as the devil can and does play tricks through these mental images. Read Metropolitan Vlachos's books and The Mountain of Silence by Kyriakos Markides for more information about the struggle with logismoi.

We can pray while using the prayer rope. Usually I have been instructed to say the Jesus Prayer 25 times and then the Hail Mary once followed by the Jesus Prayer again. Some Eastern Catholics use their Rosary beads to pray the Jesus Prayer on the 10 beads followed by the Hail Mary, Our Father and Gloria on the large bead. However, we can use a longer and more powerful Jesus Prayer (cf The Jesus Prayer by a monk of the Eastern Church):

"Lord Jesus Christ, Son and Word of the Living God, through the prayers of the Most Pure Mother of God and all the saints, have mercy on us and save us."

This prayer is extremely powerful and is usually prayed while making a prostration.

Any comments?

I enjoy how you start off every one of your posts with a praise to Christ. That's awesome.

I guess I would find it difficult to pray the Rosary without meditating on the life of Christ. I have no doubt that the Devil can play tricks but these meditations are pretty much the same. How different can the Scourging at the Pillar be or the Crucifixtion? But what you have described as what the Eastern Church does sounds beautiful. May the Holy Virgin pray for reconciliation between the Orthodox and the Catholic Churches.
