Homeschooling

The fact is, if a parent is looking to really do damage they can do it easily and that damage can only be undone by the childs will to get away from it. On top of which, most parents who are so horrible that they would try to hurt their kids won't want to deal w/ them 24/7 and so probably would send them to school. I'm not saying that the only kids who go to school have parents who aren't loving, but it's pretty safe to say that the only ones who homeschool have very loving parents.

For those of you who don't home school and don't know how difficult and time consuming it is, I will explain. Homeschooling takes over your entire life. It takes a very dedicated parent to commit to it and that kind of parent is probably the kind that can be trusted to educate & socialize their own chidren.

Of course, a lot of people homeschool for religious reasons. The problem w/ reglion is that the only thing that distinguishes religious education from brainwashing is whether or not you agree w/ it.

I want to commend the homeschooling parents in this thread, I think you are making a loving sacrifice for your children. Keep up the good work.

What are your views on homeschooling? If you're a parent who homeschools your child(ren), what made you choose that option and do you believe that it's always superior to conventional schooling, or just more appropriate in certain circumstances?

I have read the statistics on homeschooling vs public school vs Private school and I personally am all for homeschooling. I am excited by the children and adults I have seen come out of this movement.

Now I dont have kids yet, but when/if I do I will teach them at home. I have several reasons #1 I want to give my kids biblical, scientific, historical reasons for their faith. That way when they do meet people who riducule them for christianity they have firm ground to stand on, #2 Working in missions, I travel a lot and want my kids to be able to travel with me, and be involved in the ministry. #3 As a loving parent Im going to know my kids strengths and weakness better then most, I want to challenge them through their weekenss and enable them to pursue thier dreams....(I have a friend who homeschools her kids and allows them to pursue their intrests....she has 13 year old who is a talented artist and seemstress an 11 year old who will likely have his pilots liscence by 16, a 9 year old who is tanning his first hide to make moccisons. and two other equally curious youngsters....#4 Children are a blessing from the Lord and He has entrusted them to us.....not to the Public school system.....think about it your school age kid gets up, eats breakfast, goes to school....spends aprox 7 hours at school. They come home, watch TV, do homework, play in the back yard, eat dinner and go to bed....how much time do they actually spend with Mom and Dad's undivided attention? (Not much is it) Sure we have weekends and vacations but this isnt a custody issue were discussing!!!! Under what influence is the majority of a childs day spent......God commaneded the parents to raise their kids not the local school system.

Is it always supperior....No, but for me it will be.......for a parent who is not willing to give their kids their all, it would be a detrimental situation.....I have known many homeschooling families. The majority are wonderful testimonies...a few are great examples of what not to do....I think it comes down to this, what do you want for your kids....can do a better job educating your kids? Then by all means go for it.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I saw a poll in the Christian Teens forum a few months ago about homeschooling, and was extremely surprised to see that about half of the respondents to the poll (almost exclusively Americans) said that they were homeschooled. I live in Britain and I've never come across anyone in real life who is/was homeschooled, nor heard it seriously defended. To be honest, I don't think that many British parents even realise that it's an option.

It's more in certain circumstances, the biggest biff with it is that the parents and the whoever is being home taught has to really be motivated for it to work. Other than that it's really great; although a person has to meet core requirements for each year if they are to be homeschooled (at least in my state and school district) however it leaves it open to set their pacing, find their own materials to learn from, plan their own time, and if they are really into it, they can get through the requirements much quicker and so be done with the school year in half the time or less, and can either do vacation the rest of the year, or start on the next grade requirements. It also allows for things such as planning vacations so that they are educational and can count toward school credit.


PS was both homeschooled and went to public school.
