Believe it or not, Palm Sunday is a mere two weeks away. Now, I know that mine isn't the only Baptist church that celebrates the holidays on the Christian calendar. So what are you guys doing for holy week? Anybody else have a Maundy Thursday service?

Im going to mass of all things. ;)

Since I've just moved here and began to get involved in the local church I am not sure if they are doing anything special for the week, i'll have to read the bulletin extra carefully this sunday.

Mass? That's great! It's always refreshing to see a spirit of ecumenism. Well, I'm sorry to hear that your church doesn't do anything on holy week. On Maundy Thursday, we recieve communion, tell the story of Jesus' betrayal and crucifixion, and mourn the death of the Lord. But unlike the apostles, we have the benefit of knowing that in three days, he will be raised to life. It's really cool.

Lol! When I started attending church for the first few times, my pastor mentioned Maundy Thursday. And the first thing I thought was "did he just say Monday Thursday!?" I suppose it's an easy mistake to make.

For others of us, we do that every day. :)

Well of course we remember the cross every day. But even in the days of the Old Covenant, God instituted specific times of the year when the Israelites were to pay extra attention to God's mighty works. Likewise, I think it's valuable for us to take time out of the year to pay more attention to the mightiest of God's works, namely the resurrection.

Oh, yes of course.

I was responding to this:
Indeed it is. But for many of us, Holy Week is the time when we take up our crosses and make the journey with Jesus from Jerusalem to Calvary.

All of remember Christ on the cross at this time of year, but some of us take up our crosses and make the journey to calvary with Jesus everyday.

I can see why you might be confused by what I'm saying. Of course, Jesus commands us to take up our crosses daily. But certainly there's no harm in taking a journey with him one week out of the year. After all, the early church did this, and I think it's a very good way to reflect on the faith.

Of course, some people don't do the Christian calendar, and I can understand that too. But I like it.

No harm at all, whether someone did this during the week before Resurrection Day or some other time, or periodically throughout the year. :)

I'll be teaching about the Lord's Supper on Palm Sunday and then we'll be oberserving it on Maundy Thursday - since we're Baptist we don't call it that we call it the "Lord's Supper service".

I think the church is also going to show "The Passion of the Christ" on Bad Friday evening.

Hey - since you are doing the Catholic thing this year, why not go to Catholic Holy Week services as well? I believe there is a special Thursday Mass and on Good Friday the Passion will be read and there might also be a Stations of the Cross (no Mass on Good Friday).

I would love to, but if I did it all I wouldnt get any class work done. Unfortunatly its a time issue.
