  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is Holiness?

When Holiness starts in a believers life?

How to attain the Holiness?

Holiness is something I've been thinking a lot about for the last three years or so, since I realised that all believers are called to be holy. I'm not sure I can really answer your questions - I'm still working my way there myself - but I've read a couple of really useful books on the subject, by J I Packer and J C Ryle. One thing I'm pretty sure about is that holiness proper begins the moment we become Christians - we're set apart, sanctified, by God's spirit, at the moment of rebirth. There is, I think, more to it than just that, but the danger I find is that it can become one of obeying rules and regulations. It's more about pursuing God Himself, than it is about following rules per se - but on the other hand, to be holy is, AIUI to live a life free from sin.

I find the song "Purify my heart" to be a really helpful prayer as I pursue holiness: "I want to be holy, set apart for You, my Master, ready to do Your will."

HTH.

I'll be interested to know what other people have to say on this subject.

David.

I think the best book for discovering holiness or anything that is about the way that God wants us to be, is the bible. Other people have the things that God tells them about, how to live there lives, but by reading the bible, having a one on one relationship with Jesus, He tells each individual how to be holy.
Although I also find books to be helpful, they are not the same thing because it can be a replacement of the relationship. especially when talking about the Spirit and holiness. Who can write a book about the Wind except the Spirit. He wrote only one book.

I Peter
1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner
of conversation;
1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

That was the verse that really helped me to decide that holiness wasn't simply an optional extra for me, but something I had to pursue wholeheartedly.

Trouble is, I've probably been a little halfhearted about it.

But I just keep coming back to God.

Good point, but other writers can help to explain and unpack certain issues that otherwise I might struggle to understand. It's like hearing a good sermon - it can help you understand the passage they're preaching on, whereas just reading the passage, you might miss out on a lot of the meaning.

IMO.

In seeking and obtaining Sanctification, consecration is necessary. Sanctification has a two-fold meaning. First, it is referred to in many places in the Bible as "set apart." It is the devotion of our life and service to God. We are in the world, but not of the world. Consecration means to set apart for a sacred office. We are not our own for we are bought with a price. The Bible in Deuteronomy, chapter 15, tells us that a slave was bought and then served his master six years, but in the seventh year God ordained that he must be set free.

God is Holy, and we are called to be holy.
It doesn't seem to be optional, but a requirement of God :

1 Peter 1:15
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;

1 Peter 1:16
for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

This has scared me sometimes, as I can't do it!
However hard I try, I can't live a holy life.
BUT...
in God's eyes I am holy, through the blood of Jesus.
Through His death, He has made me holy - not by anything I can do, but as a gift of grace!

Ephesians 1:4
For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.

Colossians 1:22
But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—

Hebrews 10:10
And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

So - in eternal terms, I am holy.
But - my life doesn't always line up with that.
It is an ongoing thing as well:

Hebrews 10:14
because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

2 Corinthians 3:18
18And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect[a] the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

God is still working to bring me into line with what He has made me to be.
And I have a part to play in this - to live in a holy way:

2 Peter 3:11
Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives

How do I do this?
Simply by staying close to Him! The more I spend time with Him, the more I am changed into His image.
The more I surrender myself totally to God, the more He can change me.

So - I am called to be holy, I have been made holy, and I am becoming holy!

And all through Jesus!

I was given something one night when I was waiting upon the Lord for a word....a word given through one of his vessels...a prophet.

It seemed as if the heavens opened and a mist of Holiness fell upon me....since then I have been very aware of my feet.

notice that Moses took off his shoes when he stood on Holy ground.....

Notice Paul talked of the sandles of Jesus before Jesus was baptized........

we ourselves are not Holy....Holy as in our own strength to be Holy......

With Jesus abiding in us and us in him.....we are always on Holy ground .......walking on streets of Gold.

Many times I use to think that to visit the Holy land where Jesus walked would be so awesome....to actually walk the same streets as Jesus walked on or to stand on the same mountain that Jesus was on.........you understand.

But then realized that I am doing exactly that!....I'm walking where Jesus walks....all was created by him....and all belongs to him.....and as I walk I claim the very ground for him............Jesus is where I am....he promised to never leave or forsake me.........

Nothing is by our strength...........we can't make Holiness....Holiness is all God.....

Love Tam

sometimes I think you are an angel............you know just when to post a scripture and post the right scriptures......and you allow the Holy Spirit to teach after that. I'm not sure how you do that...........

Mt 8:9For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

Mt 8:10When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
