Is it wrong to enjoy hobbies and leisure?

Inspired by:

What would be unethical is wasting time, resources, and opportunitues (to do a Godly cause) as single or celibate or even widowed/divorced with no kids or kids are already adults and have moved out.

Like devoting most of it to hobbies and leisure as the unGodly would. God would have a problem with that.

I don't think that it is wrong. I didn't interpret that post to mean that. I thought timewerx was saying that spending ALL time on fun stuff was inappropriate. But, he can say what he meant himself.

I think that living your life to only please yourself and have fun as much as you can is wrong. However, everyone needs some down time and to enjoy some things.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying hobbies or leisure. I think timewerx is just saying that it's wrong to focus completely on ourselves, or only be interested in selfish gain. When we become born again, God changes our hearts so that His interests become our own (i.e. saving the lost), and we also develop an unconditional love for others.

Thanks @JAM2b and @Anthony7!

That's my point exactly. It's okay to have hobbies and a bit of fun.

It's only not okay when it occupies most of our time, attention, and sometimes, even money. That is if we believe, everything belongs to God and if God is #1 in our lives then we will know what to do with our resources, including our time and energy...

We have a selfless God who gave His only Son... Jesus Himself is selfless, His disciples are selfless, everyone in the family are selfless and devoted most of what they have to preach the good news. And that's pretty much it :)

I always think of a verse out of Titus 1:15 when questions like this come up.

"To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted"

Some activities are obviously sinful regardless, but I believe if we we invite and engage the Lord in our hobbies and interests then He takes pleasure with us. Then again, we can make anything an idol if we put it over God.

There's a time for everything under the sun. It's no sin to enjoy yourself, some exercising, engaging in a hobby, and at times doing nothing. Mental burn out is a real thing: gotta keep an eye on that.
