  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was doing some essays over the last few days. You know, "development of this doctrine," and "influences on this movement."

I have a few church history texts which are great. What I need is a good general history text that includes brief descriptions, some dates, key events.

For example, I needed to know some dates for the Thirty Years' war, and just where and who. I have an old encyclopedia, but it plays havoc with my back!

Any suggestions?

A book we have on our shelf for references like this is The Timetables of History.

When you use it, it is important to know that some dates are disputed, but for looking up things like the dates of the Thirty Years War and getting its historical context - other things that were happening around the same time, it's excellent.

However, generally when I have a very specific question like the dates of the Thirty Years War, I turn to Google before I look at the book.
