If only Winston had trusted his leaders, the press, and the experts!
How would you explain the theme of 1984?
How would you explain the theme of 1984?
One might say that fumbling of 1984 was intentionally "Orwellian."

Maybe they sold as a sort of "Antifa" self help book.It made me kind of chuckle right after Trump was elected and copies of Animal Farm and 1984 were supposedly flying off of the proverbial shelves. How does someone read either of those books, and then somehow come to relate that to the Tea Party or conservatism?

Antifa is taking the head pig Napoleon's playbook step by step.
Napoleon could always rely on the sheep (our media) to do his messaging and propaganda.
Here is a study guide for 1989. As I went through each theme I was thankful for the freedom liberties that have been laid out in our Constitution. I could also associate some of these methods that have been used in our nation's past as well as in the present. The dangers of allowing any one side to control the flow of information (news, history, etc) and how it leads to totalitarianism.
I agree, this is what I deducted too.Heck, it's even worse than that. The bit of nonsense you quoted is actually pretty brilliant -- it seems that Clinton is indicating the pro-Trump crowd that doesn't trust the government is leading us down the road to authoritarianism. Clinton, meanwhile, could have prevented us from a dystopian future, but we cruelly rejected her by abandoning all reason and electing a fascist (we were too stupid, distrustful or both to do the right thing and give her four years in the White House, seemingly).

This is an interesting statement from the study guide.
Orwell was a Socialist and believed strongly in the potential for rebellion to advance society, yet too often he witnessed such rebellions go wrong and develop into totalitarian rule.
When I read this quote it reminded me of Antifa. Their over the top radical, violent behaviors are not compatible with a free society, imo.

However, I believe that we all need to be careful that we don't step too far in the opposite direction. When we start believing that most or all of our leaders can't be trusted, when we believe that the media consists of nothing but fake news, when we defy our own logic and believe alternative facts, when we dismiss policies based on facts, we are still vulnerable to be taken in by authoritarianism.
