Something tells me this person did not read the book or even see the movie and didn't have a clue about the point of 1984 from the gitgo?

Kinda' horrifying.

God help us.

It made me kind of chuckle right after Trump was elected and copies of Animal Farm and 1984 were supposedly flying off of the proverbial shelves. How does someone read either of those books, and then somehow come to relate that to the Tea Party or conservatism?

Heck, it's even worse than that. The bit of nonsense you quoted is actually pretty brilliant -- it seems that Clinton is indicating the pro-Trump crowd that doesn't trust the government is leading us down the road to authoritarianism. Clinton, meanwhile, could have prevented us from a dystopian future, but we cruelly rejected her by abandoning all reason and electing a fascist (we were too stupid, distrustful or both to do the right thing and give her four years in the White House, seemingly).

Yes, Clinton could have saved us all if only we would have given her the chance to do so. Never mind the reality-altering that the Clinton's have engaged in since they showed up in politics...

How would you explain the theme of 1984?

The dangers of allowing any one side to control the flow of information (news, history, etc) and how it leads to totalitarianism.

Maybe they sold as a sort of "Antifa" self help book. ^_^

Antifa is taking the head pig Napoleon's playbook step by step. ^_^

Napoleon could always rely on the sheep (our media) to do his messaging and propaganda.

I read somewhere that there really is a training manual for Antifa. Apparently they dropped one recently when they targeted someone to beat up.....come to find out, they had beaten the stuffin's outta one of their own Antifa comrades.

*wonders if he's still part of Antifa*

Here is a study guide for 1989. As I went through each theme I was thankful for the freedom liberties that have been laid out in our Constitution. I could also associate some of these methods that have been used in our nation's past as well as in the present.
This is an interesting statement from the study guide.
Orwell was a Socialist and believed strongly in the potential for rebellion to advance society, yet too often he witnessed such rebellions go wrong and develop into totalitarian rule.
When I read this quote it reminded me of Antifa. Their over the top radical, violent behaviors are not compatible with a free society, imo.

I agree, this is what I deducted too.

However, I believe that we all need to be careful that we don't step too far in the opposite direction. When we start believing that most or all of our leaders can't be trusted, when we believe that the media consists of nothing but fake news, when we defy our own logic and believe alternative facts, when we dismiss policies based on facts, we are still vulnerable to be taken in by authoritarianism.

I think that you forgot to add the link.

One might say that fumbling of 1984 was intentionally "Orwellian." :)

I've seen people describing the first part of the passage (where what actually happened in 1984 is described) as "holding up four fingers" and the second part (where it is claimed that the point of the event was to sow mistrust for authority) as "holding up five fingers."

I think we are rapidly approaching that point, if we
aren't there already. Much of Congress is for sale,
and they only care about voters at election time.
And rather than making laws for the good of the
country, they all have their pet programs (and their
paid sponsors).
