• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hi I'm new to this website and new to Christianity, I grew up believing in God but without really knowing what that meant. I've recently started to look more into Christianity because of my boyfriend. He is very religious (a Born Again Christian) and has made me want to learn more about Christianity. I own a bible but I find it hard to read and understand, I think partially this is because of the fact that I have been raised without a religious background, and I therefore find much of what is written in the bible hard to believe and understand. I want to believe more strongly I'm just unsure of how to do it.
If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated :)

Hi Caroline and welcome to the forums. I suggest you ask your boyfriend the things you don't understand. Also you could go with him to his local church, maybe they have there some study group, you could join and ask there the things you don't understand. Also we have here a subforum where you can ask questions, here is the link: Ask a Chaplain

I hope you'll enjoy your time here.
God bless you!

Hello, and welcome to the forum, and to The Faith! Glad to have you with us.

Is the bible you're reading a modern translation, or a King James Version? If it is the King James, I recommend that you switch to a modern translation instead. Or, if your boyfriend's church uses the King James, that's fine. Just use a modern translation as a reading/study aid, in addition to the King James.

Regardless of translation, start with one of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) and concentrate on Jesus. Look as what He says and does, who He associates with, how people respond to Him, etc.

May God be with you on your journey.

Michael

Welcome! For the bible, it can depend on the translation, some of it is harder to understand in our modern language. The KJV, for example, is beautiful and poetic, but many of the words they used then are no longer used today, and the meaning can get lost with the way we speak now. The more you read of the translation that suits you, the easier it will be for you to understand the bible. Also, there is free bible software online (I use E-Sword and Bible Explorer), which has free bibles (as well as bibles if you want to purchase) and free commentaries to assist you.

Hi Caroline welcome to CF, there are many people here to answer your questions so just asl. I understand what you mean about understanding the Bible, not the easiesr book to read but the message is very simple, it's about God's love for you in this life and the next. I found that one way of getting understanding was to obtain a good study guide, ask questions at your church and of course ask your boyfriend. But the best person to ask is God Himself through prayer. I will pray that fund greater understanding.
