• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Norm, I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling. I have few words of wisdom. I'm sure you know way more than me anyway. ;) You, and your son, will be in my prayers tonight.

I had thought I'd just pop in and let you all know that I'm coming up on four months sober.

Also, I have come to the decision to let my husband go and have the life he wants to have without me. Of course he is doing that with or without my blessing, but until now I was resisting and making it very difficult for him. This decision brings me some peace. Fortunetly his actions have never felt tied to the desire to drink, for me. Yet, he didn't seem ready for my sobriety. Oh well, I'll praise God in all things and keep moving in a positive and forward direction. ;)

Peace in Christ,
Monica, a recovering alcoholic

Hey you!!!!!! been a while!! sorry for the few days passing in replying - been occupied some.

4 Months sober ~ thats great! I am so happy for you.

I wish for you continual sobriety and sanity, go to meetings, make sober friends, get a good sponsor and remember, One day At A Time.

its good to "see" you again!

Hiya Norm. :)

I be good. Still sober, still not smoking and a wee bit more cheerful about the whole mess.

its good to "see" a friend again and it is good to know your still sober. and tis good to hear your a "wee bit more cheerful" regardless of the mess.

now, when you say a "wee bit more", is that more than "just a tad" or less than "just a little bit"? :p

*chuckle* Well it means that I'm far less likely to rip off a person's head. It's still possible...but far less likely. :D

How you be?

I was seriously thinking of quiting but a brother did that about 6 months ago and he is still raging. He's cut everybody from his life except my mother. If that is what it is going to be like, I may just have to keep smoking cause the backyard ain't big enough for too many dead bodies.

just a quick post saying howdies to all. going thru some heavy emotional challenges but keeping my eye and mind on the prize - sobriety.

My dad passed away this past friday, my son has his court trial for prison starting tomorrow, a side of me wants to stop fighting the uge to drink and the other wants to stay sober.

In dealing with this disease of alcoholism, sometimes you just want to run away! being sober now for over 2 and half years helps but its one day at a time, sometimes one breath at a time.

Hi, My name is Norm and I am a recovering alcoholic.
Hey Norm, sure sorry to hear about your Dad! Mine still lingers on, though near the end. I went down week before last to see him. I'm sure it was the last time. He's nothing but skin and bones, with tumors as large as grapefruit hanging all over him. He sure seemed glad to see me.
These things can sure throw you for a loop. But, I know you'll come thru it just fine. Remember, anything that doesn't kill you, makes you stronger
And since I know that all the rest of you will take a peek, Hey everybody!!!! Still working seven days a week. We should be thru in about 3 weeks!!! I think I will sleep for about a week before we start the next project.
I do come and read even though I haven't been posting. Prayers, Hugs and kisses for all who want one.

Hiya Taylor43
All kidding aside, Lion, it ain't a walk in the park to quit. But in the end, it's worth it. I was extremely cranky for about a month and then that tapered off. Another downside is that I gained about 30 pounds. Ugh.

But on the upside:

I no longer have to take any asthma medication. I ceremoniously tossed my inhaler in the trash after two months without needing a single puff.

My chronic, constant cough is gone.

I got my sense smell back. (Although that has a downside! I had no idea how much smokers stink and two of my cubby mates at work smoke.)

I taste, really taste food now.

I've walking every day, only a half mile, but I can make it without huffing, puffing and turning red.

My home smells better.

I smell better.

Long plane rides are no longer an exercise in controlling nicotine fits.

Ditto with dinner in a non-smoking resteraunt.

My car smells better.

Last but not least...I'm saving $600 a month.

I will say this though, I've tried to quit smoking many, many, many times and it didn't work. This time it did and I'm glad. The difference between this time and all the rest? This time, I didn't quit because someone else was pressuring me too. I did it because I knew I had too. My health problems from smoking were becoming increasingly severe and obvious.

Good luck to you!

Thanks Garnet. The increasing health concerns is the reason it has been coming up for me more lately. I will keep your "advantage list" in mind. Lot of positive benefits it sounds like. The one I can add is that I would be a lot more productive because I wouldn't have to constantly stop for a cigarette break.^_^
