CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've no suggestions, I'm afraid. My only way of controlling myself and keeping calm is recalling how guilty I always feel when I lose it and tear into someone.

Since I have a sense of humor that often includes significant amounts of snark, sarcasm, and occasionally biting wit (whether or not everyone else finds it as hi-larious as I do) I can get a little mean sometimes too.

The same way many right-wing Chrisitans are, arrogant. They believe they are privy to some universal truth that we're not, and certainly we must sound like fools arguing against "God", so it's easy to take us for fools and talk to us as such.
I've done the same thing many times, though I usually wait for them to get nasty first. Well, I try to wait.

Are you sure you've actually been condescending, or have you simply been expressing your opinion? Are you stating what you believe to be the truth, or are you deliberately trying to be a snot and shove your opinion down people's throats?
If you honestly believe you've been deliberately condescending, then your apology is totally accepted and you shouldn't beat yourself up over it. But I don't want you to feel like you have to back down simply because OTHER people are unjustifiably accusing you of something that isn't necessarily true, but is in actuality nothing more than their own acts of derision. Some people (I won't specify any particular group) have a tendency to snidely shame others if they don't agree with that person's (or group's) positions or beliefs. So if they are making you feel guilty, or shamed, for legitimately expressing your opinion, tell them to kiss off and get over it. (Well, maybe not those exact words.
But you know what I mean.) No one has the right to NOT be offended.
