I got saved in 2003. I still consider myself a new believer because I didn't have the much needed roots to grow as a Christian.
After a lot of straying and then getting back on track, I'm finally starting to learn.
Praise God!
He has changed me.
I have all kinds of awesome testimony just from the past months when I finally began to just shut up, and OBEY already!
That's not my issue... right now at least.

Ok, so, even through all the changes of my heart, my attitude, and my focus... Even though I'm reading the Word more, youtubing sermons instead of cats doing funny things, and have a real thirst for biblical knowledge and finding more and more ways to get to KNOW GOD!!!... I despise singing in church.

I love the words to the songs, sometimes the music is ok, but wow... I really really dont like singing in church. I don't feel like I'm worshiping God. I love listening to the message and reading the lyrics. But I would feel MUCH closer to the Lord if I could just meditate on those words and then pray or like... i dunno... NOT sing.
Can someone help me out here? Do I HAVE to sing?

Even though I sincerely do not feel in my heart that following along with the words, and acting like I know what note comes next, is anywhere CLOSE to worshiping God who deserves to be worshiped wholeheartedly.

Please don't tell me "Oh well, who cares if you don't know the next note just GO FOR IT! woo!" Because then I'll just figure you didn't read the entire post. ;)
Thanks for reading!

Well, many people don't sing in church, and it's really okey. Sometimes just meditating on the lyrics and praying is much better then just singing because everyone else sings or because it's nice or someting. Just go for what you're comfortable with and what you think gets you closer to God. :) God bless!

Yeah I would have to agree with Aino, If you don't enjoy singing then don't, perhaps just read the words to yourself in your head and take them in and enjoy listening to everyone else. I do sing (very) quietly because I think my voice is awful! But I love to join in, Unfortunately singing was not an area where God chose to bless me LOL.

Unless you are the worship leader, member of the choir, or a backup singer in the church band you don't have to sing. I often just listen to others singing and bathe in the glory of God when He enters into the room. There's nothing wrong with not singing.

God isn't interested in you singing His praises if you don't desire to do so. The God who can raise up children out of stones for Abraham doesn't need anyone to sing to Him out of a sense of duty.

We are saved by the Grace of God. Not because we sing or don't sing in church. There is nothing we can do on this earth to earn Grace and Salvation. It is a gift from God and he wants us to accept it through His Son, Jesus. Of course, that doesn't mean we do whatever we want. We honor and glorify God by turning away from our old sinful nature. Now, many like to show their thanks to God by singing, others do it by prayer, worship, writing poems, drawing pictures, helping others, etc. Honor and worship God in whatever way makes you feel closer to Him. I sometimes sing, sometimes I lipsync and other times I just listen to the lyrics. Sometimes, I like to listen to Christian music on the radio, it helps me to appreciate the lyrics and then I end up singing to God. Maybe that can work for you.

Responding to original post.......

I have felt the same my whole life. It doesn't make a difference. If you don't want to sing, don't sing. I usually don't want to sing. If you REALLY mess up your life, God will let you know (probably through massive suffering).... Lol... but that suffering is chance for awakening where you can change behavior. That is just for me... Lol...

But seriously..... I have had a lot of trouble where other Christians sometimes will make you feel bad if you are not *exactly the same as them.* But look at us all... We have Catholics, Protestant, whatever in between. I don't think God cares about meaningless details..... If you heart is in it, it's what it is......... Someone who is God and openly tells you he is God surely understands more than you or I. So...... Even the Bible says, if I'm not mistaken, that God understands us more than we understand ourselves. I TOTALLY believe that. So no blood, no foul, my friend.... Rock on.

Dear Hat5678. If you don`t like singing, just speak the words and meditate on them. God is Love, and God wants our love, freely given and No tags attached. In Matthew 22: 35-40: Jesus tells us: " The first and great Commandment is: Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. The second is like it: Love thy neighbour as thyself." Jesus also tells us that on these two Commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.
If you prefer to say the words to God or Jesus, God will know.
In Matthew 7: 7-10: we are told: " ask and you shall receive," ask God for Love and Joy, and share all with your neighbour: all people you know and all you meet, friends and not friends. God will approve and see, and God will bless you. God knows that you do not like singing, therefore, just say the words and meditate on them. I say this with love, dear Hat. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.
