  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have been reading a fascinating book "Animal Miracles" by Brad and Sherry Hansen Steiger that makes me wonder the mystery of why animals save us and how they know we are in danger.

Many of the stories include loyal pet dogs coming to the aid of their owners but there are other stories of random animals coming to protect and save human beings.

For instance, one of the stories was about a group of sparrows chasing away a child molester in a park. Another was about a sting ray who carried a young man on his back for 21 days in the open ocean.

I have been thinking about this and how amazing the altruistic attribute that animals are capable of.

Its one of those things that I cannot explain. I don't know how dogs even know how to predict seizures and the such.

These miracles hint at something definitely supernatural and something beyond human logic.

However, I am sure many disagree with me but I want to hear what you guys think about animal miracles. Do you believe in these stories? I can understand why a loyal pet may protect but why a random, unattached animal?

I would encourage you all to read the book...very cool stories

Is it more likely something beyond human knowledge at this time, rather than a supernatural miracle? :)

Animals exhibit knowledges humans exhibit, even to the point of compassion. Although the sparrow thing is a bit off the wall, its not uncommon for animals to "sense the evil" in people.

Dogs have been known to dial 9-11 when their masters were in trouble, puling infants out of a fire, rearing/breast feeding other animals, counting, playing tic-tac-toe, and a bunch of other incredible things.

perhaps animals do have souls....

One of the common reported ways of animals helping people is Dolphins pushing a person to shore. This has been documented and widely known. But I once saw some futher study that indicated dolphins just push stuff. We only get to hear the stories of sailors pushed to shore, but not the ones of sailors pushed to sea.

I always like hearing those types of stories. I heard one about a dog out in the woods with his owner while they were on a hike. The owner had a heart attack and died, and they found the body about 3 weeks later and the dog was still guarding it. Rarely leaving for but a moment in search of food and water, it stayed by its masters side until rescue came.

My dog growing up was EXTREMELY intelligent. He always knew when I was sad, and how to attempt to help.. But one of the things that mysified me was his survival instinct in the knowledge of what is and is not a weapon. I could point a fork at him, and he would probably just lick it looking for food. I never shot my dog with an airsoft gun, but as a child I pointed one at him once, and he went into defense mode. I then turned it into an experiment and pointed several different things at him in the same manner... He recognized the gun, the knife, and the hammer as weapons, but I pointed a fork, a candy bar, and a bowling ball at him, and he would just whatever, even if I went to act like I was going to strike him.. Like he was just saying "I dare you to try and hit me with that butterfinger."

And it is fascinating how dogs have guns imprinted in their instincts, especially hunting dogs, as if they can see the memorie of their ancestors, even when theyve never experienced a gun's activity(bang, ignited gunpowder smell, etc)

Yeah, even having never experienced violence or witnessed anything to make them associate them with it, guns and knives make dogs wary. And they can always sense your intentions.

What good is that?

I'd expect mine to drag me home.

Anyone have ideas on why they think animals react in such ways?
The stories are anecdotal. It is possible that animals do not behave heroically in many or most extreme situations, but we simply fail to take note of those non-instances.

Are you suggesting that these stories are mainly false?
Certainly not. I am suggesting that heroic-appearing animal actions are perhaps merely animal actions that occurred in situations where timing makes them appear heroic.
