Did you know that John Wesley & George Whitefield were called "heretics" in their day??

The 1st Great Awakening was called "The Great Clamor--The Great Noise"..

It brought division, confusion, mockery.. and most of the 'church' didn't believe that it could be how God worked..

Most of the reports of "traditional churches" at the time cut out the phenomenon..

The greatest healing revival that has ever happened in the world happened in the United States in 1948 - when the church was less open to the supernatural.. more anti-spiritual gifts.

If God could move so powerfully then, why wouldn't he be able to now?? We are more open due to things like the study of quantum physics and such..

But the whole church doesn't have to believe for it to happen.. only a "handful" of desperate hungry people.. and we will see God moving in healing revival more powerfully than this country has ever seen..

I am not going to be an "experience" Christian.. I believe & stand on every every word uttered from the mouth of God..

If He says it.. I believe it..

God is a big.. too big to box.. He is Holy.. He is loving.. and He wants us well..

He is not 'safe'.. But He is Good..

And I praise His Mighty, Worth Name.. Amen..

If we are going to call someone a “heretic” it should be in a PM, not in an open forum.

~Jim

Not to be augumentative.. :sorry:

But if I can't 'say it' in an open forum... I shouldn't be saying it in a PM either IMO.. :)

and so were plenty of heretics too. Being labeled a heretic means nothing in reality other than religious people for good or bad disagree with you

And just because someone says you are doesn't make it necessarily so.. ;)

Something that I found out only recently, was that in some of their meetings Wesley and Whitefield experienced people laughing, falling to the ground, and apparently even barking like dogs. Wesley wasn't too keen on this, but Whitefield said it was fine if it was from God.
I thought those things were marks of the Toronto blessing, a fairly recent manifestaion of the Spirit.
I didn't realise the Spirit had been moving in that way in the 1700's.

I agree. Labels and charges of heresy should never be leveled at anyone unless, of course, you are the absolute voice of orthodoxy on the planet.

You know I checked up on revival history through the years, many stopped or were cut short because those manifestations were taking place and folk were scared of them.

There were plenty of such instances in the 18th-century awakenings. During an extemporaneous lecture in 1741, for example, a Scottish minister asked, "Where is the fruit of my poor labours among this people?" At this some of his parishioners cried out, in the most public manner, of their lost and undone condition, saying, they now saw hell open for them, and heard the shrieks of the damned and expressed their agony not only in words, but by clapping their hands, beating their breasts, terrible shakings, frequent faintings and convulsions; the minister often calling out to them, not to stifle or smother the convictions, but encouraged them." At a communion service during the next year in Scotland attended by some 30,000, "some of both sexes, and all ages, from the stoutest man to the tenderest child," wrote a participant, "shake and tremble, and a few fall down as dead."

Campmeeting fire
by Peter Cartwright 1785-1872

Peter Cartwright was a Methodist circuit rider. The following excerpts describing the events of the Cane Ridge Revival are taken from Autobiography of Peter Cartwright (Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1984).

"The power of God was wonderfully displayed; scores of sinners fell under the preaching, like men slain in mighty battle; Christians shouted aloud for joy." (p. 38)

"I have seen more than a hundred sinners fall like dead men under one powerful sermon, and I have seen and heard more than five hundred Christians all shouting aloud the high praises of God at once; and I will venture to assert that many happy thousands were awakened and converted to God at these camp meetings......

"There were many other strange and wild exercises into which the subjects of this revival fell; such, for instance, as what was called the running, jumping, barking exercise. The Methodist preachers generally preached against this extravagant wildness. I did it uniformly in my little ministrations, and sometimes gave great offense; but I feared no consequences when I felt my awful responsibilities to God" (p. 46).

The experiences of Pensacola and Toronto are not new.

I'm studying a Heal School Course from Randy Clark - Global Awakening.. And he talks about this.. it is amazing..

He tells of people getting the "jerks" too.. and it happened to saved & unsaved alike..

And the fellows at one of the meetings back then were in Kentucky, I believe.. and they said that when they barked, they were "treeing the devil" Just like their dogs did to critters.. :)

Found this at the bottom of one of the links provided in the penticostal thread

Let's keep in mind the words of John Wesley who once prayed: "Lord send us revival without the wildfire, but if it cannot come without wildfire, then let the wildfire come too, but by all means, send us revival!" Amen!

I am pretty *young* spiritually speaking.. almost 5.. and rather than "scare" me.. I find this stuff fascinating..

I was intrigued by "sci-fi" when I was growing up.. and I want to "see" more of the supernatural.. John Paul Jackson calls it "Naturally Supernatural.." - everything on earth is just an "cheap imitation" - a representation of something that is alive in heaven.. *smile*

That's amazing. I know nothing about revivals or their history. The way I heard people talk about the Toronto blessing, it sounded as though it were a completely new thing which God was doing.
