Herbs for pets?

I have used herbs for years myself, but recently, I've considered trying something for my dog. Commander sometimes gets arthritis in his legs. So bad at times he falls down - that's roughly 120 pounds. of dog; falling isn't good for him. The vet said try aspirin - it doesn't agree with him. I found that some vets do recommend certain herbs for your pets. Does anybody use herbs for their animals?
I'm trying to get the right information before I even consider it, but I need something to help Commander.
I tried getting info from the online vets and pet care sights - but even though they recommend herbs for a Dog's arthritis - they don't mention the herbs you use or an amount. Anybody here know about this stuff?

I have a German Shepherd who is a structural wreck--hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and spondylosis as well has herniated disks in his spine. I have been using Glucosamine/Chondroitin, MSM, and Ester-C for about 3 years now for him, and I think it has made a big difference. He weighs 70 lbs, and he's getting 1500 mg Glucosamine, 1200 mg Chondroitin, 1000 mg MSM, and 1500 mg Ester-C per day. Keep in mind, these supplements do NOT cure arthritis, or reverse damage already done, they just slow down the effects.

The best thing you can do to help your dog's arthitis is keep his weight down! Our Shepherd is very, very lean. I don't know what breed you have, but at 120 lbs, I hope it's a Rottweiler, or a giant breed. Many dogs are overweight--NOT saying your dog is, since I don't know what breed he is or what he looks like--and that contributes to joint problems.
