• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

i just started a new job yesterday. In the past I would get a job and not stay long cause I would feel so much anxiety about going, being there and the social anxioty of it. It makes me feel like I am trapped and I feel like running. please give me some coping skills, I really want a job, but this always keeps me from it. I know I need to go back to counseling but can you all give me something that might help me some right now, some kind of coping skills that work for you.

Thank you
Sunny

I'm not quite sure what type of anxiety you are having.........what are your fears about being at work? Is it the fear of having a panic attack or having to be social with other people? My mother-in-law gave me a great workbook called "The anxiety and phobia workbook" and it is wonderful. I forget the name of the author but the book really takes you through the different types of anxiety and how to deal with each type. When I was first having panic attaks I was so scared to go to work because I thought that I was going to lose control and go crazy or something, and in one part of the book it specifically talks about fears and common misconceptions anxiety sufferers have about their anxiety and it said that no one who has ever had a panic attack has ever "gone crazy" from it. This was helpful to me because sometimes anxiety can feel so out of control but the truth is that you are always in control. Well, anyway I am not sure exactly what you are going through with you anxiety but if you think about it you might check into that book.

I'm praying for you Sunny. I wish there were some things that I could say that could help you but I've yet to find the things that help me either.

What kind of job is it and is it going to be really high pressure (busy) work?

Distraction may be one way to do it. Put on a really good worship Cd (if you drive to work) and this might distract you. If you have someone drive you and chat with you while you go. This might work (my husband did a wonderful job distracting me the other week going to church just by talking the whole time)

One thing that I thought could work but haven't had much sucess with myself is the technique of bringing your thoughts into focus on what your body is doing when you are feeling anxious. I have my mind race off at a 100 miles an hours sometimes and my psych suggested this.

You need to focus in on what your heart rate is doing. How are your hands feeling? Hot cold? Is your jaw clenched? Generally any physical sensations that your body might be feeling. She said to me that it is a way of almost grounding yourself. this might work for you.

Here are a couple of links too

Hope you get some help out these.

Let us know how you go.

it is a fear of being social and I think of being judged, I feel a pressure of having to be perfect, my parents were very critical. I feel under a microscope, like everyone is watching me.

I know what you're saying sis:hug: I have been praying about starting a home business somehow for that reason. I'm a STAHM myself.
Don't have many words of wisdom, but am sending you my hugs &

thanks for your message, it is so easy to feel like I am the only one who feels this way. Looking at others from the outside everyone seems to be so normal and not have these thoughts, but you just never know what is going on in someone elses head, they can be feeling the same way.

I go back to work tomorrow, pray for me.

Oh, believe me, you are NOT the only one. I can fully understand everything you said first hand. I felt the same way you did, when I learned I was not alone, and that there is actually a name for this problem/disorder, and there is help. It was relief and tears.

I'll be glad to pray for you !

I don't know anything about those two meds, but if you search in these forums you'll find threads on them. Please be patient with yourself as meds take a bit to circulate through your system. & each person reacts differently per body chemistry.
I will be praying:)

I have not had any trouble with taking Xanax and I usually end up taking about 1 whole 2.5 mg pill per day (usually 1/2 about supper time and the other before bed.) My therapist says I won't get addicted at that small amount and it doesn't make me feel weird just not so anxious. Sometimes I take more if I am really panicy. I started on Paxil about 1 month ago and have not had to take the X as often. I do take it before bed every night no matter what as I wake up with panic attacks that are so scary. I have not tried the 2 meds you mentioned but the Paxil is working fairly well for depression and anxiety so far and the Xanax works very well for me. The paxil is not helping much with my OCD though. God Bless Kim

I take Zoloft for anxiety. I'm not depressed and it doesn't appear to affect my "mood" to anyone's notice. I feel so much better, not completely gone by any stretch but I sure am a lot more functional. I still know I have difficulties but most are manageable. My doc tells me I could have better results with something else but I have not wanted to try anything else. I guess I just don't want to upset everything just to give something else a try.

 Still, we should never give up praying because god may want to heal us tomorrow !
