  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Help with INternet

if you're connecting with a 56k modem, many of the newer computers use what's called a softmodem or software modem... this means that the modem is controlled via software instead of built in hardware... it uses your regular computer's power to run it which can cause a little bit of slowness....

you might also want to delete your temporary internet files, defrag, and scandisk :D

hey, okay so ur computer goes slow when u start the internet up. okay i think its

a) earth link thats making it go slow
b) if u have an old computer. that could do it
c) it could be something u saved or loaded onto ur computer. for say, games or something like that. it could do it.* see i had loaded my sign language cd on my computer. and it made everything go slower so. u never know. it could be that u had a cd on there that it is making it go slower.

it would help if u would give us a little more info on what the computer is exactly doing. and what kind of computer u have. um reply back and tell me whats up in more of a detail.

It sounds to me like you may have some spyware or trojan program that is slowing down your computer. I would recomend installing ADaware. It's free software that looks for these types of programs and removes them from you computer. It is recommended by TechTV and many other computer profesionals. You can download it from the lavasoft website (I can't post a link here, but it is lavasoft.com with the www in front of it)

You should also make sure you have updated your anti virus software and it would be a good idea to make sure you have updated your windows updates also.

If all of the above doesn't fix your problem you man need to reload your operating system or even format and reload.

I was going to recommend doing that too. :) Another program you can try out is Spybot: Search and Destroy. In my experience it works better than AdAware, but I haven't tried the latest version of AdAware.

I'm hearing that Spybot is better than Adware--however, I've read of others using both programs (Spybot, Ad-Aware), because if one misses the spyware, the other program will catch it. :)

Just how does the program(s) work? Are they programmed to look for spyware files in the computer, or do you have to set it up to look for those files?

Actually, it is a VERY good idea to use both Ad-Aware & Spybot together as was said previous.

Both programs have updates which you download into the update file within each program and yes, it will automatically search out spyware on your system and you can then delete it.

I run a program called "Ghost Surf" which allows you to browse the web anonymously - it tracks everything your computer does as you search the web - you would be suprised/shocked to find out just how many times your computer either get/receives requests for information. As i am browsing the forums within CF's the actual website has pinged me 956 times within almost 1 hr !!!

Better to be safe then sorry - there are ppl out there who can gain access to your computer without you even knowing it :( Make sure to practice safe net surfin' ;)

I'm getting my CompuServe at a special rate of $15.95 for one year. :D I think they were afraid they were going to lose me this past spring, so they gave me three months free and the rate. CompuServe is pretty good on dialup. It has it's quirks, but I'm used to them after 3+ years. :D

On topic, run scandisk, defrag, clean out your cache. That should help some. On dialup, the problem may even be noise in the telephone line. I've had that happen to me.
