  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I just flew in last night to visit my family; and the first thing my mother bombarded me with is a computer problem...that I can not fix :cry:

I think my sister may have downloaded a Virus; and I figured before I pay the $45 that microsoft wants to charge me I would ask my fellow Christians for any advice!

Everytime you attemp to boot the system; it tries to re-register for Windows 98(her server version) and asks for the "Product Key"

Does anyone have any ideas how this problem can be fixed? Without paying the $45 for Microsofts help line (Since they seem to think that 98 is too old to have support for!)

Also; my mother bought her operating system through Compaq (One of their package deals) So just reinstalling one program is not an option; but she doesn't want to lose all of her programs and information that is on the system!

Help; Please!!

I don't believe that Microsoft has a Server version of windows 98.......sounds like your registry is messed up, try this command from the C prompt (F8 when computer boots, then Shift F5 to go to command prompt)....

scanreg /restore

BTW, don't pay MS any more money, lol.....It would be less hassle to backup the files and wipe out and do a clean install.....

This applies to viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, adware, and anything nasty:

Start->Run
type "msconfig"
Ok

Goto Startup Tab:
search the list of items for "nasties" such as the ones shown above, you should be able to notice the weird stuff. If not, crack open a browser and search for the item in question, if it is bad, some results will come up about it being bad...or good!

This isn't a cure all, but it's close. Adware/Spyware can hide in IE settings, but most viruses and worms hide out in here...

OH and check that "startup" folder ;) Stupid programs hide there.
