  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Now I do read the bible, for the first time last night I took a look at the book of Hebrews, Galatians, and some of the other books around them and they all talk negatively about "the Law". Now when they say the law, does that mean the 613 laws of Moses, or something else. Because I also read that when Jesus was nailed to the cross the law was also. This does not make sense, because if you read Matthew 5:17 Jesus (not Peter) says that we should follow the law of the Profets. I am really confused. I have never really read the books of the New Testimate besides Matthew, and I am wondering if we really should follow the law, because I think we should.

The Law of Moses The Law of Christ
Was glorious (II Cor 3:7). Is measurably more glorious (II Cor 3:10).
Was temporary (II Cor 3:11; Gal 3:19).
Is permanent (II Cor 3:11; Romans 5:9-11).

Sprang from the law of God (Gal 3:19-21).
Is indistinguishable from the law of God (I Cor 9:21).

Demonstrated human failure (Romans 3:20; 5:20; 7:13)
Constitutes human success (Romans 7:6; 8:3-4).
Was a precursor (Gal 3:23-25; Romans 3:21; John 5:39-40).
Is the end result (Galatians 3:23-25; Romans 3:21-26).
Not rooted on faith (Galatians 3:12).
Rooted in faith (Galatians 3:24; Romans 3:22; 5:1-2; I John 3:23).
Inscribed on tables of stone (II Corinthians 3:7).
Inscribed on human hearts (Hebrews 8:10).
Was to fade (II Corinthians 3:11). Is to last forever (II Corinthians 3:11).
This chart is an adaptation based on chart in Feazell 2000:36.

If that website ever comes up again. it looks better there. It was a table where the two were compared. What I copied does not refect the original. The table it was in did not copy.

Hope that you can see that the Law of Moses and the Law of Christ is the difference between the letter of the Law and the Spirit of the Law.

I appreciate your confusion, and frankly much of the framework by which the New Testament has been traditionally understood only serves to heighten that confusion.

Have you ever been interviewed on the phone by a political polster? The questions are designed to give the answer that the polster wanted (or whoever framed the question). Many of the translations are like that too. This is not to say that they are technically inaccurate, only that they are leading.

Trying to use the end of the book (the New Testament) to interpret itself is difficult indeed. It is rather like reading a mystery novel by only reading the last 3 chapters - you don't know who the players are or what the plot is.

Every line of instruction in scripture is a Torah (law), sometimes the first five books of the Bible are referred to as the Torah (the most common usage). Some times in the New Testament (I don't really like that term New Testament, but use it to facilitate communication) it is referring to civil laws, sometimes it is referring to only specific parts of Torah (the first five books).

So then the answer seems to be that we need an education in what the writers of the New Testament knew, a deep understanding of the first five books - this is the foundation that all the rest of scripture is based on. Then it will become clearer over time what is being talked about later on. Then we will have the skills to be like the Bereans.

Acts 17:11
And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul's message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to check up on Paul and Silas, to see if they were really teaching the truth.

Hang tight - we all get challenged by trying to understand the word from time to time as HaShem brings various issues to our awareness and we go through the process of understanding...... He will not leave you nor forsake you - He will lead you as a sheep to Water ;) The place between point A and point B may seem barren or dry or scary, but His hand is there and He will bring us to the Water. Continue to trust His good plan and purpose for your path ;)

Shalom mjterry87,

Here from the B'rit Khadashah(New Testament):

Rom 3:1-31 HNV Then what advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the profit of circumcision? (2) Much in every way! Because first of all, they were entrusted with the oracles of God. (3) For what if some were without faith? Will their lack of faith nullify the faithfulness of God? (4) May it never be! Yes, let God be found true, but every man a liar. As it is written, "That you might be justified in your words, and might prevail when you come into judgment." (5) But if our unrighteousness commends the righteousness of God, what will we say? Is God unrighteous who inflicts wrath? I speak like men do. (6) May it never be! For then how will God judge the world? (7) For if the truth of God through my lie abounded to his glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner? (8) Why not (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), "Let us do evil, that good may come?" Those who say so are justly condemned. (9) What then? Are we better than they? No, in no way. For we previously charged both Jews and Greeks, that they are all under sin. (10) As it is written, "There is no one righteous; no, not one. (11) There is no one who understands. There is no one who seeks after God. (12) They have all turned aside. They have together become unprofitable. There is no one who does good, no, not, so much as one." (13) "Their throat is an open tomb. With their tongues they have used deceit." "The poison of vipers is under their lips;" (14) "Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness." (15) "Their feet are swift to shed blood. (16) Destruction and misery are in their ways. (17) The way of shalom, they haven't known." (18) "There is no fear of God before their eyes." (19) Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God. (20) Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin. (21) But now apart from the law, a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the Torah and the Prophets; (22) even the righteousness of God through faith in Yeshua the Messiah to all and on all those who believe. For there is no distinction, (23) for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God; (24) being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Messiah Yeshua; (25) whom God set forth to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God's forbearance; (26) to demonstrate his righteousness at this present time; that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him who has faith in Yeshua. (27) Where then is the boasting? It is excluded. By what manner of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. (28) We maintain therefore that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. (29) Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn't he the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, (30) since indeed there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith, and the uncircumcised through faith. (31) Do we then nullify the law through faith? May it never be! No, we establish the law.

Shalom,

WHen you read about the curse of the law that was nailed to the cross. here is the curses. Yeshua in hanging on the cross itself. Deuteronomy 21:23 His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

To read most of the curses go to Deut 27 and read them.
