• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Recently, I have been having serious panic attacks and generally feeling very dizzy and out of touch, and my breathing feels difficult all the time. I even suffered mild hallucinations on my first panic attack.

I'd really like prayer, and also I'd really appreciate it if someone has a word for me regarding why this has happened and what it is. Sometimes it feels like suicide is the only way out-and the annoying thing is that my life at the moment is fine and nothing bad has happened. It's just random bouts of depression, anxiety, and panic attacks about nothing and feeling dizzy and strange all the time...

Thanks.

Panic attacks are very common. It doesn't mean you're seriously ill or strange, and it isn't a spiritual thing, (although of course there may sometimes be an element of these things alongside it.)

Sometimes people have one or two attacks and then they stop. Sometimes they're triggered by something specific, other times it's impossible to know why it happened.

I only had one, when I had a frightening test result at the Dr.'s (it turned out to be a false alarm thankfully.)
So I know what you mean about the breathing, it's very scary.

Did you know that all the symptoms are caused by this breathing disturbance?
Dizziness, tingling or "pins and needles", fear, even hallucinations, are your brain's reaction to the oxygen and carbon dioxide not being exchanged in the right way.

If you can try to remember when it happens, "this will pass" it may reduce the length.
Bear in mind when it happens that you will NOT die of it.
The worst that could happen is you might faint, but even that is unlikely. And if it did, you'd recover and come to quickly, and probably be able to breathe normally again, as the vicious circle of over-breathing has been broken.

One tecnique is to breathe in and out of a paper bag(not a plastic one!)
Breathe as slowly and gently as you can, in and out of the bag as you hold it over your mouth. This helps the gases in your blood to sort themselves out.

If your breathing is difficult ALL the time, even when you're feeling calm, you should get a check up in case it has a physical cause.

The trouble is, the more you focus on breathing, the more you tend to feel you can't, so if you get any warning it might be coming on, try to distract yourself from that. Not easy though.

You might need to learn some relaxation technique to help generally, but do make sure it doesn't contain any non-Christian spiritual stuff like Yoga or Transcendental Meditation, or you'll possibly add a spiritual problem.

Prayer is definitely a good idea, with this as with anything.
Do you have an opportunity to go up for prayer at your church?

A church I visit just 2 or 3 times a year lets you go up to the front and just stand for prayer, no laying on of hands - just the minister's hand raised above the persons head, and they don't ask any questions - they just ask God for help, blessing, grace, strength etc., so you don't have to try and explain difficult or private things.
It's a very gentle yet powerful way to receive from God.
Asking a same-sex friend to pray one-to-one is also great, and you could ask them how you can pray for them too, which helps direct your focus away from your own struggle in a constructive way.

I'm praying that you'll get the help and reassurance you need, and that this will stop happening.
I'm off on my hols now, so won't be around for a week, but I'm sure you'll get more replies.

God bless, Susana

CS2X,

Pray in tongues. Pray and pray until everything is flushed out.

A guy in our church suffered from panic attacks for about nine years. He was put on a cocktail of drugs. He got addicted to sleeping pills and suffered from insomnia. He had to take like six sleeping pills just to sleep a few hours at night. Becos of his panic attacks, he didnt dare to leave the house much. He also became bankrupt becos he couldnt work. He put on a lot of weight too even though he tried to watch what he ate. Needless to say, his wife and kids suffered becos of his condition.

Then my Pastor taught on the importance of praying in tongues last October. So he began to pray and to pray and to pray every symptom away.

In short, he's totally free and even a care group leader today. Hallelujah!

If you don't know what is causing it how can you pray about it and how can we pray for you unless God shows us what's wrong. But rest assured the Spirit in you knows! So let him pray for you through you! Pray in the Spirit my friend, and don't cease until its all gone!

Don't be afraid.

:)

I'm scared to pray in tongues because while drunk once I prayed in mock tongues. I know this is digusting, but I have repented for it and will never touch drink again. This night of drunken mock-tongues speaking and stupid blasphemous yelling actually preceeded the panic attacks, thought I have repented for that night and it wasn't a spirit-it was my fault, as I wanted to scare my friend. Drink turns me into a nasty, annoying, and scary person, so I won't touch it again.

I think that you should seek medical advice and a counselor...that will help you a whole heck of a lot. I know what the breathing is like when you are under the anxiety...but as for the rest of the stuff...I haven't gotten it that bad...I also know what the feelings of suicide is like...really, seek help...it WILL help...also, a friend would do you well if you can open up to someone who can keep you accountable and be there for you to talk with.

I don't believe that you NEED to pray in tongues...it is something that you can do if you want to do it...God understands all languages and doesn't need someone to speak in tongues...just pray...that's all.

Provided he knows what the problem is and what to pray. As you can see, no one here seems to really know how to advise him rather than to go see a doc, becos they dont really know what the root cause is.

I'm MUCH better now. I simply trust Jesus, think positive, and I'm ok, even if I do feel a bit dizzy or "distant" from reality at times. I don't think I'll ever understand the true reason for them-could be the Hindu temples I visited, the blashemous night I was drunk, or something simply genetic. But I am better at dealing with it and even thought physical symptons continue (like hard breathing, dizzyness etc.) I am not depressed or suicidal-infact, I got suicidal during a panic attack because I thought I'd be stuck like that for ever!

I have the same problems myself with Panic Attacks and while praying and meditating on God does help I really need psychological help also. There is nothing wrong with that either. God gives us professionals to help get through these moments and while it sounds like Andrew knew a man who had a bad experience does not mean everyone does. You can choose not to take medications. This is what I did and I think the people I am with will be a great help without Meds. It isn't good to get "distractions" or start avoiding things. This in the long run only make things worse and hender your progress. I only speak from experience and it is not a fun place to be. Blessings to you on your journey. I hope you can find a good medical professional who can help you. I will say an extra prayer for you! :prayer:

I started having a racing heartbeat, palpitations, shortness of breath, panic attacks and dizziness a couple of years ago. Turns out after many doctors visits I have mitral valve prolapse/dysautonomia. Which is an imbalance in your nervous system. You may want to check with your doctor about it. There is a website that really has great information on it, it is www.mvprolapse.com. I still have symptoms from time to time but I pray and concentrate on God watching over me and I get through them. I don't know what I would do without his grace and strength. I'll be praying for you. :prayer:

hi there,cs2x
a couple of things.firstly you said that you have repented of some things
well i want you to know that the blood of Jesus has clensed these, the only one reminding you is the devil ignore him
start believing what God says about you
He thinks you are wonderful
he just hangs around your lips waiting to hear you speak
he sees you as if you had never done any wrong (blood conenant)
and many more wonderful scriptures
the devil is a liar
and,
If god had a refridgerator, your photo would be on it

there are two thiefs of your peace
yesterday ( already gone)
tommrrow (a mystery)
the present ( thats why its called the present)

God bless ya heaps your bro john
(oh ,and i will pray for you)

This is a very interesting thread. Panic attacks are brought on by stress. And often, our blood pressure can go up, or go down during a panic attack. This can also cause dizziness. Another thing is, lack of sugar. Thuis causes hypoglycemia so we feel weak trembling legs ect: this is the body reacying to a lack of sugar.

Praying in tongues will not help. Not everybody has this gift. What does help is to breathe into a paper bag to stop hyperventilating. To gently stroke your feet. And to relax and let time pass.
A panic attack brings out the flight or fright pattern in us. We cannot run from them.
And, we shouldn't allow them to frighten us.
The best thing to do is just relax and let them pass. They are temporary and frightening when they happen. But, until the mind heals of stress, just relax and tell God all about it, then read a book.
Don't let them frighten you. I started hyperventilating when I was 13 years old. The irregilar heart beat, faint heart beat, difficulty in swallowing....yes....a common pattern for heaps of people. Millions throughout the world actually.
Don't be afraid. There is nothing to fear except fear itself.
