  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Mary was the first believer? Do you have scripture to back that up?
The Angel Gabriel told her she would conceive by the power of the Holy Spirit and that she would name the child Jesus because he would save people from their sins. She said she was the handmaiden of the Lord and would do His will. I would pretty much say that makes her the first Christian.

That would be the Scripture from the Visitation of the Angel who told her she was to have a child.

Um, I believe that she had faith in God at that point, more faith than I probably would have been able to muster, but was that faith specifically in Christ's power to save or was it in the Godhead in general?

The angel said you shall have a child and name him Emmanuel God with us. Was Mary stupid? They (the Jews) were waiting for a Messiah.. You think she didn't know?

Lk 1:
26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”

34“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[a] the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37 For nothing is impossible with God.”

38“I am the Lord's servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.

Did she disbelieve Gabriel? Or did she say: Let it be?

She knew what Gabriel's words meant. Here's her state of mind, lambslove:

39At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40 where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!”

The Magnificat

46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me. Holy is his name.
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers.”

She knew what she had consented to.

I can see how you might interpret it that way, but I don't see an overall continuity of the idea of there being a queen of heaven or a supremacy of Mary above all other humans, but that might start an illegal debate so let's just let it drop there.
Hi Lambsglove . . I was only answering your question . . . it only becomes a debate if you start debating. :)

Look at Revelation without chapters and verses . . . .and what do you see just before John begins to tell us about the woman clothed with the sun, with a CROWN of 12 stars, and the moon under her feet . . .

The Ark of the Covenant appears in heaven . . . . Again . .Mary is viewed as the Ark of the Covenant . . .for Jesus compared the giving of Himself to the manna given in the wilderness . . the Ark housed the manna (among other types of Jesus) . . . .Mary housed God made Man in her womb . . .

The Ark appears in heaven . . . then John tells us about the woman . . .

Back to the issue of queenship . . . it was explained earlier that Mary is called Queen because Jesus is King, and in the Davidic Kingdom, the Queen was the mother of the King . . .and this made sense to you . . so go with this . .

That in Revelation the woman, Mary, is CROWNED with 12 stars, also serves to confirm she is Queen, the Queen Mother to her Davidic Son who is KING or all . . . but this all is in relationship to her Son . . only in regards to her relationship to her Son . .

Peace in Him!

Michelle
No, Mary was anything but stupid. And I know they were waiting for the messiah, but they were thinking that the messiah was going to be a political leader so she may have believed that she was birthing the next king. And many prophets had had names similar to his, Noah literally means, He Will Save, so she might not have understood completely the ramifications of who he would be. Plus, when she took him to the temple and heard the blessing of the elderly people serving there, she didn't really understand and pondered their words in her heart. I would say that the very first believers were Simeon and Anna, the two servants of the temple who had prayed to God asking that they would not die until the saw the coming of the Lord's Christ:

Luke 2:26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27 So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, 28 he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said: 29 "Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, According to Your word; 30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation 31 Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, 32 A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel." 33 And Joseph and His mother F12 marveled at those things which were spoken of Him.

While Mary and Joseph were still not sure of who they had been given, Simeon and Anna knew that they had seen the face of God.

So she disn't believe this?:

31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32H e will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”

At this point, lambslove, you are debating. Please cease and desist immediately.

Okay so all that talk about Jesus and inhereting the throne of David, what? That was lost on her? A political leader? Are you kidding me?

Lambslove, Mary knew that her son was the Messiah.... why do you now have a problem with that, too?
