The Angel Gabriel told her she would conceive by the power of the Holy Spirit and that she would name the child Jesus because he would save people from their sins. She said she was the handmaiden of the Lord and would do His will. I would pretty much say that makes her the first Christian.lambslove said:Mary was the first believer? Do you have scripture to back that up?
That's correct, Sts Peter and Paul church is Byzantine Catholic.Monica02 said:Lamslove,
What Rite was your mother? I also have never heard of Mary referred to as the Mother of the Holy Spirit and I am thinking perhaps this might be an Eastern Rite term.

Um, I believe that she had faith in God at that point, more faith than I probably would have been able to muster, but was that faith specifically in Christ's power to save or was it in the Godhead in general?Miss Shelby said:That would be the Scripture from the Visitation of the Angel who told her she was to have a child.

The angel said you shall have a child and name him Emmanuel God with us. Was Mary stupid? They (the Jews) were waiting for a Messiah.. You think she didn't know?lambslove said:Um, I believe that she had faith in God at that point, more faith than I probably would have been able to muster, but was that faith specifically in Christ's power to save or was it in the Godhead in general?

Hi Lambsglove . . I was only answering your question . . . it only becomes a debate if you start debating.lambslove said:I can see how you might interpret it that way, but I don't see an overall continuity of the idea of there being a queen of heaven or a supremacy of Mary above all other humans, but that might start an illegal debate so let's just let it drop there.
No, Mary was anything but stupid. And I know they were waiting for the messiah, but they were thinking that the messiah was going to be a political leader so she may have believed that she was birthing the next king. And many prophets had had names similar to his, Noah literally means, He Will Save, so she might not have understood completely the ramifications of who he would be. Plus, when she took him to the temple and heard the blessing of the elderly people serving there, she didn't really understand and pondered their words in her heart. I would say that the very first believers were Simeon and Anna, the two servants of the temple who had prayed to God asking that they would not die until the saw the coming of the Lord's Christ:Miss Shelby said:The angel said you shall have a child and name him Emmanuel God with us. Okay so all that talk about Jesus and inhereting the throne of David, what? That was lost on her? A political leader? Are you kidding me?lambslove said:No, Mary was anything but stupid.
