How can some people use the verses concerning homosexuality yet not follow the verses concerning other laws, etc...?
Dear otnememweirdname,
the ten commandments are really the basis for al the other 613 commandments in the law. ANd even the ten can be summariazed in one, love. This is not just a "christian" invention or view, this is rabbinical.
So, f.inst. you talk about homosexuality, well one of the commandemnts say that we should not commit adultery. This commandment is further explained in the mosaic 613 laws and it certainly include homosexual pracsis, as well as incest and pedophilia sodomi and plain all sex oustide of marriage.
Even though we as belivers are freed from the law and are not supposed to live by it (cause we can't) but by grace trough faith...but that doesn't mean that the law isn't true anymore. God view of right and wrong never changed! If he said homosexuality was wrong then, we can't say that it is allowed today. Thats the reason why Paul also mentions homosexuality as a sin in his letters. Sin is still sin, and we must still proclaim right and wrong as explained in the ten commandments, or the world would not know what sin is and there could not repent. This is very important.
It is not picking and choosing.
When that is said, i agree with you that some pastors pick something from the law given to the jews and leave out others. The things i'm thinking about are rules for the religious life in israel, the temple service , clean and unclean food etc. These things is not standards for belivers today, of course. We don't need to practise surcomsitions, and we don't have to abstain from bacon, thank god!
