  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Dave Thomas
“Don’t just study people who succeed, study people who handle success well.”
—Dave Thomas

Dave Thomas was adopted by a loving family, but his mother died when he was only five. His father remarried three times, and the family moved more than a dozen times before Dave reached his mid-teens. The only constant in his life was his grandmother, who gave him security and taught him the pleasure of hard work. Dave remembers first learning about restaurants because his father took him out to eat quite often. Since he liked to eat, Dave thought that owning a restaurant would be a great career. He took a job at a Hobby House restaurant, and when his father moved again, Dave stayed behind. At age fifteen, he was on his own.

During the Korean War, Dave joined the army and attended its Cook and Baker’s School. After the war, he was given the opportunity to manage four Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants. Dave learned the business well and in 1968 sold his KFC stock to begin his own chain of restaurants named after his daughter Wendy. His concept was to create a better hamburger—made from fresh meat, made to order, and served in a relaxed, family atmosphere. Wendy’s grew rapidly until Thomas stepped out of the leadership in 1982. After several years of falling sales and declining quality, Thomas returned to the company as its “spokesman, in-house cheerleader, and roaming quality-control man.” Once back under the founder’s watchful eye, Wendy’s rebounded and once again began to prosper.

Consider This: Success is a long-term proposition. It requires constant attention to the guiding principles that made you successful to begin with.

Calvin Klein’s Fashionable Success

“The soul of this man is his clothes.”
—William Shakespeare

At almost any clothing store in the world you can find racks filled with designer fashions—polo shirts with logos, jeans with designer names embroidered on back pockets. In fact, designer labels can be found on virtually every kind of apparel. This was not always the case; prior to the 1970s, designer fashions were found only in the most exclusive stores. But Calvin Klein changed all that. Calvin seemed to have a knack for fashion even as a child. Sometimes he would help his friends buy clothes. It was natural for Calvin to consider fashion as a career, and he studied at Manhattan’s Fashion Institute of Technology in hopes of becoming a designer.

For six long years after graduation Calvin struggled with low-paying jobs around New York’s fashion district. He believed that perhaps he was in the wrong industry, and he considered joining a family friend in the grocery business. Instead, his friend was so convinced of Calvin’s talent that he provided $10,000 in seed money to enable the fledgling designer to start Calvin Klein Ltd. In 1968 Calvin began by designing women’s coats. They were classy, simple, and elegant, and fitted right into the changing lifestyles of the era. Calvin seemed to have a knack for the tastes of the “post-hippy” generation. His comfortable, stylish, and relatively inexpensive clothes introduced the concept of designer fashion to an entire generation. By 1975 Klein had won three consecutive Coty awards and was inducted into the Coty Hall of Fame.

Consider This: What are you good at doing? What do you enjoy doing? Is there any way you can do it for a living? Can you use that talent in the work you are doing today?

Steinway Quality
“Music is the universal language of mankind.”
—Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Heinrich Steinweg was born in the small German Hartz Mountain hamlet of Wolfshagen. Beginning in 1806, young Heinrich experienced a series of tragedies that wiped out most of his family. Orphaned, he joined the Prussian army and became a bugler. Despite having no formal training, Heinrich was an able musician, entertaining the troops on the zither and pianoforte. When he left the army, he became a church organist and began to build pianos in his kitchen at night. Although Heinrich worked in primitive facilities, people recognized the high quality of his work. But as his business prospered, revolution forced Heinrich and his family to move to America.

Settling in New York City, the family name was anglicized to Steinway. Heinrich and his three sons took jobs with different piano makers to learn the details of doing business in the United States. After three years of working for others, they started their own company, Steinway & Sons, producing one piano a week. The Steinway piano soon became known for its quality and clarity of sound. Steinway was more concerned with building the best rather than building the most, and Steinway pianos soon began to win awards. In 1872 Steinway Village, a Long Island mini-town that included employee housing, a school, library, and bathhouse, was opened. During tough economic times, companies offered Heinrich royalties to use the Steinway name on items such as radios. Since the Steinways could not control the quality of those products, they refused to compromise the integrity of their name. As a result, the Steinway name continues to be associated only with the finest musical instruments in the world.

Consider This: A reputation built on quality must never be compromised.

Positive Thinking
“The mind grows by what it feeds on.”
—J. G. Holland

Norman Vincent Peale is the founder of the “Positive Thinking” movement. His book The Power of Positive Thinking has sold millions of copies. The bases of Peale’s theory are principles found in the Bible. First, you must believe in yourself; you must have a healthy respect for your own worth as a child of God. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Next, you must use your mind to tap into the power offered in the scripture. “You are given the mind of Christ.” Then, you must be in touch with the power of prayer for guidance and inspiration. You must expect the best. “All things are possible to him who believes.” Personal problems can limit your capabilities, so you must learn to rise above defeat, depression, and thinking that limits your potential.

Peale admits to being caught with his positive thinking down. When Guideposts magazine was in its infancy, it quickly ran out of capital, and Peale’s board sat in a meeting ready to kill the project. Tessie Durlack, a member of the board, chided the other members for their lack of faith and vision. She had them pray “thanks” for new subscribers and for the ideas to make the magazine a bigger success than they had ever believed possible. The exciting change of attitude that took place saved Guideposts, which is now one of the most widely read publications in the world.

Consider This: Positive thinking is a way to focus your mind on your goal, with the belief that you will obtain it. Do you believe? Do you reinforce that belief daily with some exercise of positive thinking?

Kresge’s Change for the Better
“The old order changeth, yielding place to new.”
—Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Harry Cunningham went to work for the Kresge Company in 1928 as a stockroom trainee. Gradually, Harry was promoted to better jobs, and management noticed his good ideas. In 1957 he was appointed a vice president with an assignment to study the marketplace to determine the best plan for the company’s future. Harry logged over 200,000 miles of travel and began to believe that discounting was the wave of the future. In 1959 Cunningham was made president of the Kresge Company but did not make the switch to discounting immediately. He instructed his executives to study the discount industry. Little by little, Kresge’s management saw that discounting was holding a growing share of the retail market, and in March 1961 made the decision to move into discounting.

Forty K-Mart stores were opened by 1963, and the number swelled to more than a thousand stores by 1977. Hiring and training good management for those stores was difficult, and the company actively recruited at over 100 colleges and universities. Future management was trained in small discount stores named Jupiter. In 1976 K-Mart surpassed JCPenney as the nation’s second-largest retailer. In a changing and competitive marketplace, K-Mart continues to find its share of success. It has responded to market challenges by emphasizing quality management, high-turnover merchandise, across-the-board discounting, and by clustering stores in a single market area to aid in advertising.

Consider This: Organizations that refuse to adapt to the trends of society will vanish. Are you studying your competition to see how you will be able to adjust to the new order when it comes?

The World’s Greatest Salesman
“If you throw enough spaghetti against the wall, some if it is going to stick.”
—Joe Girard

Many people call themselves great salesmen, but Joe Girard has convincing evidence. He was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for several years in a row as “The world’s greatest salesman.” As a Chevrolet salesman in Chicago, Joe racked up sales record after sales record. How did he do it? Joe’s techniques are simple and straightforward and can be used in almost any market. He made himself known by giving away thousands of business cards each year. He even threw them into the stands at football games. Each customer was placed on Joe’s list and received a greeting card every month, for New Year’s, Valentine’s, birthday, St. Patrick’s Day, etc. Once a year Joe sent his list of “friends” a sales kit that included a packet of Joe’s cards and a $25 reward offer to each friend who sent in a new customer. When Joe had free time at work, he was on the phone, cold-calling prospects and gathering names of new prospects.

Joe recognized the importance of each person. His “Law of 250” states that if a person is given a bad deal, he can adversely influence 250 other people. On the other hand, if that person is given a good deal, he can influence 250 other people to think highly of Joe Girard. If a customer had a problem with a car, Joe personally saw to it that the problem was resolved. The customer knew that he was buying more than the car, he was buying the services of someone who could and would step in to keep him satisfied with what he bought.

Consider This: Are you working your list of customers, clients, or constituents? Are you keeping in touch, always saying “thanks” to them, and keeping them satisfied?

Powerful Mottos
“Without a vision the people perish.”
—Proverbs 29:18

Many leaders have a “trademark,” which is usually one or more sayings that concisely describe that person’s or company’s beliefs or management style. Harry Truman had his motto inscribed on a sign that sat on the presidential desk, “The Buck Stops Here.” Ronald Reagan’s desk had a sign saying “It Can Be Done.” Tom Watson of IBM used signs that simply said “Think,” and placed them in all of IBM’s offices. Ray Kroc of McDonald’s constantly talked about Q. S. C. & V. (Quality, Service, Cleanliness, and Value). Sysco, a Houston-based food wholesaler lives by the motto “Don’t sell food, sell peace of mind.” Carl Sewell preaches the concept of “customers for life” to stress superior service at his auto dealership.

Mottos usually do not mean anything unless management backs them up. Watson indoctrinated all new employees of IBM with an incredible amount of exposure to corporate beliefs. McDonald’s will remove the franchise from any restaurant that does not fulfill Q. S. C. & V., as outlined in a detailed operating manual. Mottos serve the purpose of crystallizing a complicated issue. The two-finger “V” for victory sign in World War II, “Remember the Alamo,” and “54-40 or Fight” were used to unite a people for a cause. Most people want something to believe in, something to give them a feeling of pride and belonging. Mottos can boil down a complicated issue to a short phrase or symbol that the masses can understand and rally around.

Consider This: What motto do you live by? Do you have the opportunity to solidify your group or organization by adopting a saying or symbol that describes your goals?

Bill Lear Flies High
“Every real accomplishment first begins as a dream.”
—Alan C. Elliott

William P. Lear loved Horatio Alger tales, stories that told of people who rose from obscurity and poverty to wealth and fame. Lear wanted to be an inventor; however, he had few resources to buy the tools and parts needed to realize his dream. He once told an interviewer that at age twelve he resolved “first to make enough money so I’d never be stopped from finishing anything.” After studying engineering during a stint in the armed forces, Lear landed a job with an Illinois electronics firm. In the late 1920s he became a design engineer at Galvin Manufacturing Company (Motorola), a maker of radio chassis. It was there that Lear developed his first important invention, the automobile radio. He enjoyed sufficient success to acquire his own airplane. Aviation was still in its infancy, and Lear was sure that was a ripe area for his inventive powers. He soon found that navigating an airplane around the country was a very crude process—one simply followed known landmarks. To improve navigation, Lear invented the “Learoscope,” an electronic device that allowed an aircraft to be navigated by the use of radio signals.

In 1939 Lear formed Lear, Inc., a producer of aircraft instruments, which was a highly successful enterprise. His next dream was to build a small general aviation jet, but his board of directors voted down the project as unfeasible. Lear sold his 23 percent interest in the company and formed a new enterprise, Lear Jet, Inc. His new jet took to the skies in 1963 and was an immediate success.

Consider This: Have you taken the time to dream? Are you taking the initiative to follow your dreams?

Acres of Diamonds
“He most lives who thinks most, who feels the noblest, and who acts the best,”
—from “Acres of Diamonds”

Could one person giving one speech save a dying church, found a university, support a hospital, and change millions of lives? Yes! The man was Russell Conwell and his speech was titled “Acres of Diamonds.” As a young traveling reporter in 1870, Conwell heard a folk tale as he traveled in a camel caravan along the Tigris River. The story told of a Persian farmer who was lured by the stories of riches in faraway places. The farmer deserted his fruitful lands in search of immense wealth. As the years passed, the farmer’s youth and health disappeared, and he died far from his home, a disillusioned pauper. Soon after the farmer’s death, acres of fabulous diamonds were discovered on the property he had abandoned.

That simple parable changed Conwell’s life. He began relating the story to others, telling them, “Your diamonds are not in faraway mountains or in distant seas; they are in your own backyard if you will but dig for them.” Other stories were added to the tale, and Conwell became a sought-after speaker. He believed what he preached, which led him into a life of helping others—including saving a dilapidated Massachusetts church, serving for forty-three years at Philadelphia’s Grace Church, and founding Temple University and Samaritan (now Temple University) Hospital. Around the world, Conwell inspired audiences with his speech and raised money for his causes. By 1925, he had delivered the “Acres” speech more than 6,000 times.

Consider This: People yearn for truths that will give them better and more satisfying lives. A message of inspiration, hope, and optimism never gets old. What messages are you sending to your employees, family, or customers?

Win Friends and Influence People
“Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain—and most fools do.”
—Dale Carnegie

Dale Carnegie urged the YMCA to allow him to conduct public speaking courses. The organization refused to pay the normal $2 per night fee but allowed him to begin the courses on a commission basis. Within three years, Dale was making $30 a night in commissions. For over fifty years, the Dale Carnegie courses have been teaching the road to success. Lee Iacocca claims that it was the confidence he acquired from a Carnegie course that lifted him from being a mediocre manager to being a success.

Carnegie’s practical advice is as relevant today as ever: Be interested in the other person, ask him questions about himself, and listen with interest. Avoid condemning people. Put yourself in their shoes, try to understand their perspective. You can’t win an argument. Avoid arguments. Show respect for another person’s opinion. If you are wrong, admit it and ask for forgiveness, quickly and with feeling. Never ask someone a question that you know will be answered “no.” Ask “yes” questions. To get cooperation, make the other person feel like the new idea was his or hers. Give challenge and honor to those who would take on a task. If you must criticize, always envelop the criticism in praise. Talk about your mistakes first. Above all, let the other person save face. Praise people for every good thing they do, no matter how small. Make them live up to a reputation of excellence. Any person who can do all these things will find it easier to successfully work with people.

Consider This: Be respectful of the other person, and always keep him or her in mind. Treat other people with the same respect with which you want to be treated.

Keeping in Touch with Your Customers
“A good listener is not only popular everywhere, but after a while he knows something.”
—Wilson Milzer

Keeping in touch with customers is an essential part of every successful business. One industry that neglected to keep in touch with its workers and customers was the American automobile industry of the 1970s. In a 1983 analysis, a Stanford Sloan student from General Motors observed that people in Detroit had a different view of the automobile world than did the rest of the country. In Detroit, almost everyone was associated with the American automobile industry. As a result, they naturally bought and drove American cars. There were Chevys, Fords, and Chryslers in every parking lot. Automobile executives had their cars checked daily by the company mechanics, and any defect or problem was likely diagnosed and resolved before the end of the day.

At the same time in places like California, the American car was being passed over in favor of new imports which were less expensive and more reliable. While Toyotas and Datsuns were not common in Detroit, they were fast gaining foothold in other parts of the country. It wasn’t until the 1980s that American car manufacturers began to respond visibly to the import threat by significantly improving the reliability of American automobiles. Since then, there has been a continued increase in quality and a realization on the part of U.S. automakers that the public will not automatically buy American cars, they will buy those cars that provide the quality, safety, and features the public wants.

Consider This: What are you doing trying to run a business sitting behind a desk? Get up. Get out. Find out what’s really going on.
