  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life,
to behold the beauty of the LORD
and to meditate in His temple.
For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle;
in the secret place of His tent. He will hide me;

And lead me in a level path
Because of my foes.
Do not deliver me over to the desire of my adversaries,
for false witnesses have risen against me,

I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD

Fred Smith of Federal Express
“You can tell how big a man is by observing how much it takes to discourage him.”
—François Fenelon

Education is much more than simply learning facts. Facts do not provide insight. Facts do not promote risk-taking. Looking back on your life, have there been times when you had the gut feeling that something would work when everyone else thought it would not? Were you right? As a student at Yale, Fred Smith wrote a paper outlining the need for a nationwide delivery company that specialized in time-sensitive goods. According to Fred’s research, such a company might have a substantial market. The paper got a C, but Fred did not forget the idea. After graduation and a stint in the Marine Corps, Fred bought into an aviation service in 1969. He commissioned two consulting firms to study the feasibility of overnight express delivery. What the companies told him confirmed Fred’s earlier research.

Fred Smith raised $80 million, including some family funds, to start his new venture on June 1, 1971, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Large amounts were spent on advertising, which included full-page ads and television commercials. Operations began on April 17, 1973, serving twenty-four cities. The company almost went under several times and did not show a profit until 1976. By 1980, however, earnings totaled almost $60 million, and Federal Express had become the dominant force in the overnight courier business.

Consider This: When your ideas are rejected or ridiculed, continue to investigate on your own until you know if those ideas were truly sound.

Mood Rings
“The business of life is to go forward.”
—Ben Johnson

Innovation often comes when a person takes an idea from one area of science, business, or industry and applies it to another. Marvin Wernick constantly kept his eyes open for innovations in the jewelry business. He reasoned that although most of the jewelry designers were on the East Coast, people’s tastes were different in California. Marvin knew that, just as some people preferred more color in their wardrobe, many also wanted jewelry that was more colorful than the classic styles then available on the market. As the operator of a jewelry store, Marvin saw firsthand the boring colors offered by the eastern designers. He felt they were not paying attention to what people wanted and were anything but “hip.” That is when Marvin began making his own jewelry. His ideas of what people wanted proved to be correct and he soon became quite successful.

As Wernick searched for new materials to experiment with, he noticed a story in Science Digest about a new liquid crystal that was being used in cancer research. It changed color as the temperature changed. Wernick experimented with the crystal and fashioned it into jewelry that changed colors as the wearer’s body temperature changed. The resulting “mood ring” became a huge success. Other manufacturers copied the idea, but Marvin was able to make his rings fast enough to stay ahead of the competition. Like most other fads, the mood ring lasted only a short time. Nevertheless, it stands as an excellent example of how innovation can quickly capture a market.

Consider This: Be prepared to take advantage of fad ideas while they are hot, and also be ready for the bottom to fall out.

The Hula Hoop
“Experience is not what happens to a man; it is what a man does with what happens to him.”
—Aldous Huxley

Wham-O Manufacturing Co.’s original mega-hit product was a financial failure. It began when a friend brought an Australian exercise hoop to Rich Knerr and Spud Melin. The two were already marketing several sports articles and thought the hoop looked like fun. They called the item a Hula Hoop, trademarked the catchy name, and began promoting the hoop in parks, where kids would gather around for a look and then run to their local store to buy one. Wham-O gave away “seed” hoops on beaches and college campuses to get the craze going. The company’s marketing plan was outstanding, and the Hula Hoop took America by storm. However, there was a problem with the success.

Although they had applied for a patent, more than forty competitors entered the market, drawing on the promotion that Wham-O had already begun (and paid for). It was too late and too expensive to force the competitors out of business. Although millions of Hula Hoops were sold, the fad was short-lived and, in the end, the company lost money on the toy. However, the advertising placed Wham-O in the public eye. The company became a household name. Also, the Hula Hoop experience prepared the firm to better protect its next popular product, the Frisbee flying disc. The Hula Hoop was brought out again several years later, and although it was not as popular as it was initially, Wham-O made money the second time around.

Consider This: A loss may really be a success in the long run. It can give you experience and exposure, and prepare you for the next challenge.

Dell Computers
“When fortune smiles, embrace her.”
—Thomas Fuller

New ventures are often conceived on the leading edge of technology. Such has been the case for many companies in the microcomputer industry. Even with billion-dollar companies such as IBM and AT&T leading the way, the window of opportunity often opens wide enough for even an ill-financed college student to make it big. Michael Dell began preparing for his big opportunity as a teenager selling newspaper subscriptions. After working on a phone bank with fifty other callers and making few sales, Michael thought of a more direct approach. He began getting information about newlywed couples and contacting them directly. Sales soared. Later, when his family bought a computer, Michael took it apart in an effort to gain an understanding of the device all the way down to the chip level.

Michael believed his future was in computers, but his parents insisted that he enroll in the pre-medicine curriculum at the University of Texas in Austin. From his dormitory, he began to set up his business, placing ads in computer magazines, assembling the machines, and shipping them to customers. Michael’s company, PC Limited, soon grew so large that he convinced his parents to let him run it full time. Within several years, his computer sales were over $100 million annually. Using the concepts of zero defects and just-in-time inventory, Michael’s company, now Dell Computers, has kept costs down and quality high. Even though he is very sure of his business sense, Michael Dell has put together a senior management team from leading high-tech companies to ensure his firm’s continued growth.

Consider This: Watch for the window of opportunity to open. It is at that point that anyone with brains and determination can successfully compete against all the rest.

The Golden Rule Stores
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
—Jesus Christ

Today, when we enter a modern department store, we may think of how it is run by a gigantic and complex international conglomerate. Yet, every business was at one time a single person’s idea. The giant corporation is an extension of that original idea. James Cash Penney was born in Hamilton, Missouri, in 1875, the son of a Baptist minister. During his early years, he raised pigs and watermelons and ran a butcher shop. He refused to supply meat to hotels that sold liquor, and his butcher shop failed. Next, he tried retail dry goods and in 1902 bought a one-third share in a dry goods store in Kemmerer, Wyoming. From that store he launched a chain called the Golden Rule stores, so named because they were based on the concept of treating all people with the kindness we ourselves expect, that is, the Golden Rule as taught by Jesus. Every store had a giant Golden Rule sign hanging on a prominent wall.

Penney believed that every person was a “human dynamo, capable of accomplishing anything to which he aspires.” He despised debt, drinking, and smoking, and he demanded zeal, enthusiasm, and loyalty from every employee. Penney claimed that it was the application of the Golden Rule that made his stores (now named JCPenney) a success. By the time he died in 1971, Penney’s stores had annual sales of over $4 billion and were the nation’s sixth-largest merchandiser.

Consider This: Do you apply the Golden Rule to your work? Do you demand zeal and enthusiasm from yourself and your employees?

C. E. Woolman and Delta
“Honesty is the first chapter of the book of wisdom.”
—Thomas Jefferson

The airline on which many people travel for holiday visits and business trips traces its beginnings to the lowly boll weevil. It was the early 1900s and Collett Everman Woolman, an agriculture district agent, battled the destructive boll weevil in an 0X5 Jenny biplane that had been rigged as a crop duster. The dusting operation was a rousing success, and Woolman left the agricultural service in 1924 to join the newly formed Huff Daland Dusters company. He was made vice president and field manager. Since the dusting business was seasonal, Woolman worked to secure mail routes, and in 1929 he began to offer passenger airplane service. The company was renamed Delta Air Service for the Mississippi delta region it originally served.

In 1945 C. E. Woolman was named president and served Delta until his death in 1966. Under his leadership, the company became one of the largest and most respected airlines in the industry. Woolman’s credo was found in his adaptation of the Golden Rule. He reworded it specifically for Delta Air Lines. “Let’s put ourselves on the other side of the ticket counter,” he would challenge. Woolman knew the value of each customer’s loyalty, and he pressed Delta to provide a high standard of service. He believed that any business that was completely honest in all its dealings was likely to succeed. And Delta did succeed.

Consider This: Never forget that businesses are made up of people with feelings, beliefs, and a hunger to belong to something that is good, honest, and worthwhile.

Bernie Kopell
“Every man is the architect of his own fortune.”
—English proverb

Life can seem very tragic and unfair, even in the land of opportunity. You have a dream but find yourself in the dumps with no real prospects of recovery. You are depressed, and in your depression you cannot muster the energy to pull yourself up. You become too cynical to believe that there really is a “cure” for your failure. Bernie Kopell was a failure as a vacuum cleaner salesman. He had come to California to be an actor, but for even the few parts he was able to land, he received no pay. He thought that was what he deserved. Then, one day as Bernie was moping in the back room of the vacuum cleaner store, the owner put on a motivational record. “What a con job,” Bernie thought. But as he was trying to ignore the record, he accidentally heard the statement, “Your mind is as the earth. Whatever you plant in it grows. If you plant potatoes you get potatoes. If you plant roses you get roses...” Bernie began to listen.

Soon he was paying attention to the record, and it wasn’t long before he began reading and attending lectures. Bernie began to believe that God had given him talent, and he became proud to be who he was and considered himself worthy of success. Acting parts—paying roles!—began to come his way. He appeared on Get Smart, That Girl, and in tons of guest spots on other television comedy programs. His big break came was he was cast in the role of Dr. Adam Bricker on Love Boat. The popular show aired from 1977 until 1986 and made Bernie Koppel a well-known star.

Consider This: There is no telling what we can accomplish in our lives if we will only begin to believe in ourselves.

Bill Moog
“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.”
—Warren G. Bennis

Bill Moog was an engineer at Cornell Aeronautical Laboratories (later Calspan Corp.) when he invented a servovalve, a control mechanism used on a variety of machines. The company tried to market the device but received just one order for three of the valves. Since Cornell figured such a small order was not worth its effort, management let Moog personally handle the project. He cranked out the devices in his spare time. The company must have given up on the device too soon because orders kept coming in. Seeing an opportunity, Moog and his brother Arthur, along with Lewis Geyer, formed Moog Inc. The founders worked eighteen-hour days for over a year just to meet their orders. When new employees began coming on board, Bill made it his goal to make the company a good place to work.

The buildings at Moog Inc. were designed with plenty of windows, clean environments, and piped-in music in the cafeteria. Having felt intimidated by inspection policies at other places he had worked, Bill instituted a self-inspection that allowed each employee to act as his own inspector. The company instituted massive technical training to help its employees gain advanced skills, and it also offered grants for college tuition. Job security became a chief concern and provisions were made against layoffs. However, the exceptional work environment did create one major problem for Moog Inc.: Each year 12,000 people routinely applied for a handful of available positions.

Consider This: A good environment provides a company with a loyal, dedicated, and productive work force.
