People still walk and run here, with tons of snow and -27 to -40 without the wind chill. Peopel here run with shorts when it is -2, and wear sun screen!!! How about an indoor track? Try a treadmill or elliptica or step machine. Join a soccer team, go swimming, play raquet sports etc. Pack a healthy lunch that ioncludes whole grain bread, non processed meat, fresh fruit, WATER and lots of it.

Try to eliminate junk food from your diet and try to not eat when you're not hungry. Keep healthy snacks around like fruit, baby carrots, celery, etc. Oh! And I found that it helps to keep a food journal for a couple of weeks - write down EVERYTHING that you eat...even the little snacks! It's a real eye-opener as to how much you really eat in a day!

I bought an elliptical trainer and it was the best thing ever until it broke. It wasn't even like I was exercising, it was so easy. I don't have the money for another one or for a gym membership at the moment.

Get your diet in order, that's the first thing you need to do. Check out John Berardi's 7 Habits of Highly Effective Nutrition here:

http://www.johnberardi.com/articles/nutrition/7habits.htm

Then form your shopping list (or encourage your parents to form their shopping list) around the following:

That's because, you're not really exercising. In other words, you aren't really doing anything challenging to burn calories or increase your athletic condition (get in shape). Somewhere deep down, I think everyone truly knows that if it's easy enough that you can read a book while you're doing it, it's not really doing much for you.

Well I have lost 25 pounds in 6 weeks. I joiined a site called www.thedailyplate.com which help me keep tract of the food I eat. It lets you know how many calories you have eaten and how many more you can eat. Say you want to lose 2 pounds a weeks it will calculate with your weight and height how many calories you can consume to meet that goal. God bless. :)

I lost 60 lbs , went from a size 20 to a size 7/9 by just playing (doing things I enjoy with my kids) and eating less (not stuffing my face).

As fitmom said -2 isnt that cold.
Kids here come out of the swimming pool wearing bare minimum waiting to be picked up in -30 weather!).

Get out and move...when you move you dont feel the cold (if you are dressed properly-layered).
I personally found that buying gyms are pointless...I have one to give away infact.
Each to their own though.

Good luck.

Join something that you like...swimming, soccer, try a martial arts, kickboxing is a great fat burner and fun!!

How does the water not freeze in -30 weather? Better yet, how do wet kids not routinely get hypothermia standing around in -30 degree weather?

LOL Yes we do swim indoors in the winter as CCB said above (although people do hottub outdoors in the winter and they also go to the hotsprings).
Anyways the kids do dry off and change before comming outside...its not like they come running out to the vehicles in their bathing suits.
They will go out side the doors of the pool about 5 min or so b4 parents arrive to see if the parents are in sight, (they dont stand out side for a few hours if that is what you were thinking soaking wet LOL).
The kids come out though with their coats undone, no toques etc...parents meanwhile are freezing todeath in their vehicles (as one gets older they seem to feel the cold more so ;) ).
That said, we do have a thing called the polar bear dip that takes place in winter. If one is brave enough they dive into ice water....:D
Ive ran around in the snow in my bathing suit in younger years, eventually heading for a hottub ^_^ , however I havent swam in ice water and dont think I ever will...I think one would have to be insane to do that...

Doesnt the above look like fun? To support a good cause maybe I would on second thought

The pool would be indoors.

*Socrastein wears his shame face*

For whatever reason, that's the impression I got and that's the picture I had in my head.

Socrastein, I understand where you were coming from though... Most people drain their pool for the winter. Especially us, ours is inflatable.
LOL we had many pools, at one time we had 3 going in our back yard.
(Now there's something to brag about);)

One was a huge plastic one with a slide :p
we lost the plug so I ran to the store and grabbed an inflatable one for about $5.99 (Fields). For some reason we ended up with two inflatables.
Found something to plug the plastic one so we had three going one day for the kids along with a fountain that connected to the hose. We used to have a blast.

When they were really young we'd bath them off in the inflatable (Not in the Winter ;) ).

However now their older and our pools just dont seem to do it for them anymore  ,
So now we send them to the swimming pool (where the water is a little deeper and over their heads).
