• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

This is my 3rd day of not smoking and it is by far the worst. The desire is so strong, I'm wearing a patch but that does nothing for the mental obsession. I'm praying, and reading in the bible, but I feel like I'm going crazy. I feel like crying, laughing, and breaking something all at the same time. Someone please please tell me this will get better, and any tips on how they got through it would be greatly apreciated.
Thanks for listening
Jennifer

It does get better but be prepared it takes a while. When I quit smoking I remember feeling like my lungs were saying what the heck is wrong with you where is that stuff you used to put down here!. You just have to say to yourself everyday, several times a day, I will not smoke again. I have come this far I can go farther. Make no mistakes it isn't easy but you can do it!

And just think you will no longer smell like an ashtray. My husband use to tell me that, your mouth tastes like an ashtray.

Yes it does get better but it takes time. I know the pain you are going through but just remember that it is for the better. This is your decision, you made it this far. I am over six months down and most days I don't even think about it anymore as I have other things that consume time but it did take a long time to get to thins point. Yes there are still moments but they are rare and fleeting. It's much easier to ignore them now! Anyway praying that all goes well and that you will find the peace that you are looking for. Evie

Remember Yom Kippur--there is a promise of deliverance (Joel) among others. Do not stand bf the Lord empty handed. Just happens to be October---

The habit is harder to break than the addiction--it does get easier, but I am still struggling too. Good Luck..

Tell yourself you will give it another 10 minutes--then IF you still want one you will consider it then.. keep doing that over and over. Most times I get past that "badddd" urge in 10 minutes....

I keep saying smoking is such a small thing to come between me and God. That helps.

The patch did not work for me. I used Nicorette Commit Lozenges. They worked great. I did have to get on wellbutrine for a while to get off the lozenges, but when I took the first one, I never smoked another cigarette, 2 1/2 years ago. Don't give up. It can be done with Christs help.

I feel crazy, too. I guess all my emotions are coming out now. I was smothering them with smoking before. How are you doing now? I know this is hard for you.

This happened to me to. The first year was not to bad. I started smoking when I was 12 and stopped when I was 42. There was a lot of rough years in there, a lot of repressed emotion. I am still working through it, but I am gaining ground. I think I stopped growing emotionally when I started smoking.
