  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

i want to get a stereo system and the one that meets the most of my needs is the panasonic sc-ak510. the problem is, i know practically nothing about it aside from what i've seen in store descriptions online! has anyone owned this type of system and have any recommendations, cautions, or reviews on it? (i know this doesnt have much to do with computers and software, but its the best place i could find!)
thanx!:D

Any 'system', if that means it is an all-in-one thing, is probably junk. If it combines a radio tuner, amplifier, CD player, and speakers, you can be pretty sure it is garbage.

Stereos are cheap. You could buy a complete component system on Ebay for probably $100.

Buy the pieces seperately. You need a receiver and speakers. Your computer probably has a CD player and MP3 player; just hook it into the receiver. Or buy a CD player.

Panasonic has absolutely no reputation as an audio company.

Decent brands for electronics are Onkyo, Marantz, Outlaw, and then beneath that brands like Kenwood, Pioneer, Technics.
Good speaker brands are PSB, Paradigm, and beneath that Cambridge Soundworks, JBL. These are just examples, there are others.
Never buy speakers from an electronics company (i.e., Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Kenwood).

Unless you are cramped for space never, ever buy a 'system.' They always use the cheapest parts. If one component breaks, you have to pay to replace *everything*. The speakers are almost always complete garbage.

Systems last a few years. Good individual components last decades.

EDITED TO ADD: I just looked this system up. It's even worse than I imagined. It has a five disk changer and a *dual* casette deck? This is a disposable toy. The specifications provided by Panasonic are outrageous lies even by audio standards: they claim it has 160 watts per channel. If that's true I'll eat my hat. Something on this overstuffed monstronsity is guaranteed to break soon after purchase. For the $200 it's going for you could buy a decent new receiver and bookshelf speakers or excellent used equipment on Ebay. Look for Cambridge Soundworks speakers on Ebay; they're sold by the manufacturer with warranty for very cheap. Then buy a nice receiver to go with it.
