• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi, My mother is an alcoholic.
She is 78 yrs old, and for the last I don't even know how long its going on.
But when I first knew something was wrong was when she fell and broke her hip about 8 years ago. Then when I went to straighten up her apartment, I found empty wine bottles hidden all over her place.
She Is getting worse with not remembering things where she put things etc... along with me always being the brunt of her nastiness.
the last straw was when I got a phone call from her landlord that she was in their bedroom at 4.00 am saying whatya doing still sleeping..and they woke to find wine spilled on their kitchen floor.
when I went again to see how she was and hopefully to shock her into her behavior, she was a mess, and blaming her sleeping medication on her doing what she did, although she had a glass of wine next to her bed and was ready to drink it at 10am.
So she does say she'll get help blah blah blah... I take her to dinner with my family and my father in law orders a glass of wine, and out of her mouth comes wheres mine?
that was when I had enough when I drove her home I lost it. she tells me I make it all up, and its me whos crazy, and to get out. So I told her something was going to be done. She left me no choice. I told her either assisted living or something along those lines. Well she told me to get out and never come back. I have not spoke with her and quite honestly I don't know what to do.
does anyone have any suggestions. I tried saying id go to therapy with her, ive tried everything.
Thanks

Tell her if she keeps up that way, she's going to end up in a home because people, not you of course, think she's losing it. Get her a copy of the Big Book and offer to take her to AA. Maybe go to Alanon yourself. Alanon is for people who are trying to deal with Alcoholics. It will give you support from people who have been where you are and gotten to the other side of it. I pray for you and yours.

AA and Alanon cost about a dollar an hour, but you don't even have to pay that if you don't want to. The Big Book costs around 20 bucks but they often give them away at beginners AA meetings.
