  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hi Jim. Merry Christmas to you!

Ed...I posted this just to see if there would be a response. I'm glad there was. Maybe we'll get something started. I would hope that every kind of ELCAer would be able to participate, cons, mods, libs...the whole blessed mess of us.

We'll see!

Hi to both of you, it seems the whole Lutheran foruim is kind of inactive, but in particular the ELCA category is completely vacant. I think it has to do with the fact that it is a "blessed mess" and that is why it doesn't click....anyhow that is just my opinion. Merry Christmas and best wishes!

Hi DB. Hi searcher.

Sometimes it gets a little frustrating, but overall, I enjoy being part of the blessed mess. I like the fact that we engage each other on questions like sexuality and ecumenism. I know where I stand on those issues, and I'm sticking with the ELCA. I hope that those who stand on the other side of those issues will also stay. We have a strong core of theology and tradition in our church. If we can just figure out how to live with each other...

Howdy all,

I see that this thread seems to be vaguely about finding new members for the ELCA/ELCIC forum. Well, here I am.
I spent several years over on Table Talk at Oldlutheran.com, but it was hard to have discussions with some of the other kinds of Lutherans and I haven't been posting there for about 9 months.

Anyways, I thought I would say "Hello" back and see if I am the first ELCIC member to post here. I am looking forward to some discussion with some Lutherans that are a little less hostile to moderate (or what I like to call Orthodox) Lutheranism.

Advent Blessings from the Great White North!

Just for clarication, I am not technically a "Rev" yet. I am in the in-between stage called seminary. I am doing my vicarage (and that makes me a Vicar instead of a Rev) right now, but I figured that since will be talking a call in about 15 months that its just easier not to have to change my username then in case I am still around.

Can't say that I mind being called Rev though!

Well...we could call you "Vic." I believe that "Reverend Seminarian" is a proper title for someone in your position. So...RevSemCowboy?

In my time here at ChristianForums you are the first ELCIC member I've met. At least that I know of.

So, how's things in the ELCIC?

Here's a question, not for debate, but for my personal edification. Isn't same-sex marriage legal in Canada? What's the ELCIC's position on performing same-sex marrages?

OK. That was two questions.

Hi there RevCowboy! I am a seminarian too, at the GTU in California. Where are you studying? Orthodox might be a tricky word to use, since Lutheran orthodoxy already refers to a particular historical movement, but I certainly share the sentiment.

If I may make a humble suggestion???? Join in on the discussions in the main forum. Even though you may feel that you get beat up with scripture I think if you can take the heat you will enjoy some good discussions, and, it should also bolster your discussions here in the ELCA forum. I remember a couple years back the ELCA'ers joined in all the time in the main forum discussions and even had more members debating then the conservatives did. We have good moderators and I think you will feel comfortable if you just give it a try. :)

As you probably know, I just left staff, so I am quite familiar with staff and their ability to judge inpartially. I think for honest good hearted discussion though we must all realize that we do have differences, but discussiing them can bring rewards for both sides. I know I have learned some of your principles and hold them to be good, but, I still hold to conservative beliefs and always will.

Hey! Give it a try

Hi all! I've been around here at CF over 3 years and have lurked a lot on the Lutheran board and have never really felt at home. I consider myself a moderate ELCA'er, kind of in the style of NT Wright in Anglicanism. I end up spending more time on the Anglican forum because I'm liturgical/high church and there seem to be more moderates there. I would post more here if there were more collegial dialogue instead of polemics from the right and left.

BTW, I am a TEEM candidate for ordination and am taking classes from Wartburg Seminary.

Thanks, RegularGuy for posting this thread, maybe we'll get some more activity once we get to know each other a little bit.

Hi Iowa!

Have you ever decorated a statue of Luther?

Hi Iowa!

Have you ever decorated a statue of Luther?

I've heard of that tradition!

As a TEEM candidate, I don't spend a lot of time on campus - we have weekend intensive courses in the fall and spring and then weeklong classes in the summer, mixed in with online courses. So, I get a bit of a flavor of seminary life, but not like a regular student. I am getting M.Div. credit for the classes I am taking, so hopefully someday when my kids are a little older I can finish the degree after ordination.
